Do any of your HS kids participate in open gym programs in the off season? I know there are rules regarding coaches etc.. How are these programs structured? What kind of participation do you see with Varsity/JV players.

My son's program offers 20 some dates from Nov to Feb, open to all 7th thru 12th grade "prospective" players. Usually get anywhere from 20 to 60 kids from a HS of 1200 and a MS pool of 800 Problem is one day is a weekend morning and the other is a school night from 7 - 8:30 PM I often hear parents complain during summer ball the school should do more, when I tell them of this program it is usually the end of the conversation. Kids playing other sports are "excused" but some of the dedicated ones still make the better part of the workouts. Well over half of the Varsity & JV players usually attend.

My son's baseball program has year round access to the high school facilties. They have a training program (FASST) three days a week. They get a ridiculously cheap membership (limited to certain times) to a local baseball academy (to use the cages) where the coach is an instructor. The coaching staff can coach fall ball as long as none of the high school equipment is used and the team isn't named after the high school. The team has captain's practices twice a week on the fall. The high school loaned their field to the fall ball league. Guess where all the team's games are whether they're home or away. Starting in January the team does baseball workouts without "official" supervision. There just might be a coach yelling instruction from the stands.
