An interesting juxtaposition in the baseball world:

As the Nats pull the plug on Stephen Strasburg to preserve his arm, hopefully, just up the road a piece the Orioles now call up #1 prospect Dylan Bundy, who this year now has gone from rookie ball to the show, has thrown 109 innings, almost certainly more than in any of his 19 years.

The O's look very serious about going all out right now, and this move sure sends that message.

Actually Dylan would be an advertisement for those who believe pitchers should not be babied. (so far)

Actually the Orioles watched his work load closely this year. Taking him out early even when he was dominating the game.

In his final HS season he was 11-0 with 8 shutouts. 0.30 ERA, 20 hits, and get this, he struckout 158 and gave up 4 walks, that's right 4, in 71 innings.
He also hit .448 with 10 HRs.

I can't find his stats as a junior, but was told he pitched even more that year.

Then in the summer he played for DBat along with Archie Bradley (another first round pick) I think DBat got to the championship game in the Connie Mack that year. Not sure how many innings he logged with DBat during the summer.

Both Bundy and Bradley were on the PG/Aflac All American West roster. Bradley was available to pitch in the nationally televised All American Game (and pitched very well). Bundy wanted us to let him throw, but he had just thrown a lot 2 days before in the Connie Mack Championship. We didn't let him pitch, but he did get to hit in the game.

Afterwards, I had people ask why we didn't let him pitch, he might be the best pitcher in the country. I told them that they just answered their own question. If anything happened to him, we would become famous and not in a good way.

But Dylan Bundy was a workhorse in high school. With those two, and they had more, DBat had the best pitching staff I've ever heard of. Though Midland and others have had some great ones, too.

DBat also had another pitching staff among the best ever, maybe the best. That one included two MLB All Stars and a Cy Young. Clayton Kershaw and Jordan Walden, plus they had another top guy in Shawn Tolleson.

Anyway, it will be very interesting to see how Bundy's career goes. Those that were careful and threw a lot less are having surgery. My guess is that Dylan Bundy is still pretty fresh after 109 innings. I sure hope he stays healthy.

I'm really enjoying all these young guys in the Big Leagues.
