Thanks to Netflix the amount of British TV shows I watch has jumped.  Recently I have been watching Skins and noticed that the use of baseball bats as the weapon of choice amongst the criminal element seems to be very high.  At first I thought nothing of it, but then I saw it happen a few more times and started to think about it.  I also have seen baseball bats used in other British shows as well.  Baseball is pretty much a fringe sport in England.  How do all these folks get a hold of baseball bats?  I have been in British sports shops and do not remember seeing baseball equipment.  Though when I take a look at The Decathlon stores (British sporting good chain) website I see baseball equipment prominently  displayed.

I guess Im perplexed by the fact that baseball is not really played in England and the availability of baseball equipment.

Baseball bats in English shows? It’s called the continuity director not doing his/her job. This person is in charge of making sure nothing out of place or era is in the show.

I was watching a MASH rerun the other night. I noticed there was a Spin A Card pinball machine in the background. The Korean War was early 50’s. Spin A Card was made in 1969.

After gun control in the UK knives and cricket bats are the weapons of choice.

Figured I would follow up on this.  I posted the same observation on a travel board related to the UK.  The basic answer was, very few folks in England own baseball bats.  The overwhelming thought of why they show up frequently as the weapon of choice for the criminal element in TV shows and movies is due to their popularity as a weapon of choice in American Gangster movies.
