Thank you FrankF for posting this...I just saw it myself a few minutes ago. Beenthere, up until this point Ryan has been used in late inning "setup" situations and has several appearances of 1/3 or 2/3 of an inning. He is fine physically and I think he may see more lengthy appearances if OU's upperclassman pitchers continue to struggle (except for David Purcey and Mark Roberts and the closer, Jarod McAuliff). He's always been a starter so he's having to adjust to being a reliever for the first time. I talked to him last night after their game with UT-Arlington and he said he was ready to pitch but they dh'd him instead. He got one atbat and was lifted when UTA put in a righty reliever...the OU coaches strongly believe in playing the percentages with the lefty-righty pitcher/hitter thing. He really would love to get to bat more and of course pitch as well but he at least is getting some early playing time and we'll have to see how it all plays out for him. It's a long season and he just has to stay ready at all times. Smile

Gees, everyone....

I know what kind of player Ryan is, I tried to recruit him for the Upper Deck Cougars in 2002. I know all about OU baseball and the level they play.

I also know that he played for the Ohio summer and did well.

I'm just surprised that with his talent, he's only pitched a few innings in 14 games; and, only had a few at bats. That is why I thought he might be injured.

That is all. Please don't read anything into it that isn't there.

Thanks for posting the pic, Luke! You can now subtract the sideburns, lol. He got a nice haircut before the last home series, I'm proud to say! And I can still throw and catch as well as any 51 year old mama, too! I just don't have the "wheels" anymore. My husband and I are both "lefties" although I always batted righthanded. Ryan used to lament the fact that he wasn't born a southpaw as well. I think he believes he could be a professional by now if he were only a lefty, lol. Frown

Just got back from Oklahoma tonight and wanted to give an update just to show others how situations can change if you just keep working hard on your game. Until this weekend, Ryan had 6 relief appearances for a total of 3 and 2/3 innings (no more than 1 inning in a game and mostly 1/3 and 2/3 of an inning). He made 2 appearances this weekend against Creighton in game 1 and game 3 for a total of 5 more innings and allowed 1 run, 0 BB's, 5 K's, 5 hits, and picked off a runner at 1st base.

He now has 8 2/3 innings in 8 appearances and it appears his coach is trying to give him more innings as he pitched 3 in relief in game 1 and 2 in game 3. I wanted to post this as an update to the earlier discussion on this thread. Anyone can access the updated stats at anytime on soonersports.com on the baseball page. I appreciate the responses on this topic that was started by FrankF. Please keep my son and all the other websters' college baseball sons in your continued prayers for good health and success in their respective seasons. Good luck to all of our college baseball sons!! clap

and well he should !!!! Sorry it didn't happen while we were there so we could see more of him on the mound. But alas, that is life in baseball.

Besides, with such a great article on Ryan ... the coach has to put him in more often ... otherwise, he might look like a "fool" ... 14
