They may go overboard at FSU but this stuff goes on at most big sports universities---my son would not have been in college if not for his baseball prowess.

A kid with an IQ of 60 does not belong in college

Did not Creighton have a similar situation a few years back? Players graduating with the reading ability of a grade school kid

But four years in a college environment, to me, is better than not getting that exposure.
Coach May - I added the link to your post.

I saw this yesterday and found it disturbing. They said that a kid with an IQ of 60 could be considered mentally retarded.

Maybe we need to acknowledge that some of these kids are not college material and thus not play the hypocritical game they are somehow college material. In other words, maybe a different "quid pro quo" needs to be there for some athletes. Maybe, kids with low IQ need to be developed to their fullest extent while in college while discontinuing the charade they are college material. For example, maybe a kid who comes to college with a fourth grade reading level and leaves with a 9th grade reading level could be considered a success - given where they started. As long as the athlete showed progress and went to their classes - no matter how remedial, they could maintain eligibility. I really don't have the answers here but thought I would throw out some preliminary ideas for discussion

I know of a major college here in CT what has a 2 year school within its four year school---in the two year program the kids who have low grades get one on one instruction and they flourish

FSU also has a JUCO right across the street where kids attend if they cannot get into FSU--they have all the rights of a FSU student and after the two years, grades being sufficient, they slide right into FSU as a junior

There are many means and methods in the scheme of things

Yeah, but it was closer to 20 years ago I think. I believe the kids name was Ross...a basketball player who couldn't read. Sounds like he could have been an honor student at FSU if he majored in Social Sciences.
The Creighton kid went back to elementary school to learn how to read. I give the kid credit for sitting in a third grade class and allowing pictures to be taken.

I lost respect for the FSU program when Deion Sanders punched out a store clerk before a major bowl game and Bowden did nothing. Winning was more important than character. Because of Bowden nothing FSU does would surprise me.

I remember reading an article regarding college basketball and recruiting last year. I can't remember which credible source made the comment, but he said there are only four coaches in college basketball he can be sure are clean.

Major conference college football and basketball have become such big business as a whole they're dirty. Even Joe Paterno has had trouble with some of his recruits. Character is being overlooked in the name of winning.

Before anyone makes a snippy remark the only college football programs I don't respect are Notre Dame and FSU. Ironically they're both in the news. Go figure! Miami used to be on the list. But they've fallen into obscurity.
