The coaches on all four of our teams are volunteer coaches. We try to keep our costs to the kids as low as possible while keeping the quality of instruction at a high level. It's hard these days to find a group of non-dads that will donate so much time to such a time consuming passion. At least at the 18&U and 16&U levels, the volunteer coach may be a dying breed?

Our summer team has switched this year to a paid coach and one paid assistant, plus two volunteer assistants. The switch was made both to upgrade the quality of the program, and to eliminate the daddyball-in-disguise element that had crept in, and the parents gladly ponied up the extra money. Of course, it helps that the coach is a good one and worth every penny and more.
My same coaching staff has been together for 15 years, and we are all volunteers. We pay our own way to tournaments, etc... A few years ago one of the parents bought all of the coaches nice Oakley sunglasses, but that is about the extent of our pay. We have had various parents over the years tell us that we should be paid, but we have always declined (we are a non-profit registered corporation). I know that a few of our local competitors pay a stipend to the coaching staffs, but nobody's getting rich! I agree with a previous poster that getting non-dads to coach is getting tougher and tougher, and maybe offering some pay would be a reasonable thing to do for a younger person. My core coaching staff is 37, 58, 37, 29 years old. The 58er is house council for a big financial firm and has a lot of flexibility in schedule. During the summer season, my employer (I am a computer programmer) allows me to work from 0500-1400 so I can get to the field to prep for B.P. It is difficult on all of us, but we love it and are grateful for the opportunity!
