Ok, my son literally received an invite to the PG Aflac Showcase last night at 10pm. It is run in conjunction with the Aflac All American Game. The workout session is on Aug. 10 with the games on the 11th in San Diego. Does anyone know anything about this showcase or why some of these invites went out 9 days before the start of it? Any kind of info will help and I will be contacting PG with other questions. Just like to get input from people that have been through it or have been invited.
Thanks

If you have been invited to this event in San Diego in any capacity you are blessed because in my opinion, this is the main event "of all time" each year! That location will be literally crawling with professional representatives form every place imaginable. There will be GMs, Assistant GMs, Directors of scouting, advanced scouts, regional scouts, cross-checkers, national supervisors, area supervisors, special assignment scouts, HOF players, agents/advisors and a host of others!
Don't miss out. peace, Shep
There are two reasons we started this event.

1. Each year we are in charge of selecting every player who is named an Aflac All American. This is a very hard job because only 38 players are selected. Those players need to be divided by region (19 West – 19 East) then they have to be selected by position (2 catchers, 4 INF, 4 OFs, 1 1B, 8 pitchers is usually the way it works out). This leaves many very talented prospects who are not selected.
2. The Aflac event draws the very highest level scouting people in the country. This includes pretty much every MLB Scouting Director and even some GMs. Of course, the top colleges in the country attend also. The Aflac schedule has the Aflac players working out in the mornings and doing other functions in the afternoon. This left all these highest level scouts with nothing much to do for most of the day. We started this showcase so these scouts could see others who are among the nation’s top prospects.

The PG Showcase played in conjunction with the Aflac Classic started three years ago. It has had some extremely talented players in that time. Players like Brandon Erbe, Pedro Alvarez, Kieron Pope, etc., etc. The Showcase is free to those invited to participate. It is a two day event (this year Aug 10-11) with workout on 10th, game on 11th. While PG provides everything for the event at no cost, players are responsible for getting to San Diego and their lodging.

Last year in Baltimore, there were some 300 of the highest level scouts and college coaches in attendance for both the Aflac and PG events. It is our small way of doing something for the scouts and college coaches who attend the Aflac Classic. At the same time we get the opportunity to help some very deserving players who have a lot of talent.

The players we’ve selected in the first three years of the Aflac Classic accounted for exactly 29 first round picks. 11 from last years draft. Another 12 were selected in the second round. This means that one out of every four Aflac All Americans has become a first round pick. More than one of every three has been drafted in the first two rounds. That is why all the highest level scouts attend! Some players are disappointed and mad because they were not selected and decide not to attend the PG event. This is understandable, but they could be missing a great opportunity. Of course, we don’t hold it against any player who chooses not to attend.
It's a small number of players. Two teams! We've been working on the rosters for quite awhile. Some players we thought were coming simply can't make it. Several because their teams qualified for National Tournaments within the past week, like Connie Mack World Series. This requires getting more players at a later date.

Also, on a more somber note... Not a good excuse but our entire staff has been running tournaments every day for the past month. We have not had a lot of time to fill these rosters. Guess you could say... we didn't do the greatest job possible contacting people. We still expect to have a great group of players in San Diego.

Can't fault you for having human limitations. I'm pretty sure you'll get a good turnout regardless. I think if my son was invited the day before I'd find a way to get him there! Big Grin
Once again, last years event was well run, top quality. The players who attended the PG portion of the event enjoyed watching the Aflac workouts as after many events, PG National, East Coast Pro and East Cobb all these kids had gotten to know each other well. They also enjoyed the workout and competition in the PG portion. If your son is invited, don't miss it if at all possible. You and he will love the experience.
A few prominant left coast schools have contacted my son by phone and this will give them a chance to see him. Even though many colleges will probably be in attendance I get the feeling that the Aflac Classic and maybe the showcase are going to draw more pro scouts. You have the top 38 '07's playing in the Classic. A lot of those guys will probably be 1st round picks in next years draft. The 40 or so guys invited to the showcase probably have to be considered good second to third round picks with many of them drawing interest from the big colleges. If most of the Classic players get drafted that leaves the showcase players in a great spot to garner a lot of scholarship money. JMO
