I reviewed the measurables for catcher’s at PG’s junior national showcase. I thought I would show a little love to the guys who wear the gear. I found it interesting as the dad of a 2021 catcher.

If the player recorded a catcher Velo, they were included in the results. Every catcher that recorded catcher velo also recorded a pop time and an exit velo. Not every catcher ran the 10 or 60 but enough did to include the results. Finally, this is the junior national so only 2021s and 2020s are included in these results.

Since the results are published on PG’s website, I was interested in the average measurables for the participants. I thought the averages might help answer the question of when to showcase since the answer seems to be “when you have something to show”. The results may help quantify that answer for catchers. Since this is an invitation only event, PG, obviously, thinks they have something to show. I figured these numbers would be a good, representative sample.

The results are listed as low, high, average

10: L=1.54 H=1.91 Avg=1.738

60: L=6.72 H=7.69 Avg=7.238

C Velo: L=69 H=88 Avg=77.878

Pop: L=1.80 H=2.14 Avg: 1.970

Exit Velo: L=77 H=101 Avg=87.658

*carried out the averages to third decimal place so people could round up (or not) on their own.

Observations:

1) If you are “around” these numbers, you have something to show. These are very good numbers, perhaps even the best numbers, for underclassmen catchers because these numbers are from players that are considered to be the best that PG has identified. It’s an invitation only event.

2) If you are just shy of these numbers, you probably still have something to show. It might be time to consider a showcase or seek exposure.

3) If your numbers are better in many categories, maybe you should have received an invite .

Finally, numbers don’t always tell the whole story but it sure seems like the story often starts with the numbers.

That's really good info to have playwitheffort and thanks for putting it together! I'm not discounting anything you've said here but you mentioned a couple of times the significance of this being an "invite only" event. My 2019 C has received multiple invites to invite-only PG events and, to my knowledge, they have never seen him or talked to his coaches, and he is not in their system for a player lookup. I believe at one point he provided a basic write-up of himself and that is all I'm aware that they know about him. Point being, invite-only may not necessarily mean that these are the best players PG has identified unless identification includes only what the player says about themselves. I'd be very interested in any further information that folks might have on this topic.

Requesting an invitation for most PG showcases is just a formality. The National showcases are different. The numbers are usually limited to around 200.
