What are your guys opinions on who should get the phillies GM position? Here are the top candidates it seems:

Brian Cashman (yankees GM, reportedly wants out)
Gerry Hunsicker (local philly guy)
Mike Arbuckle (asst. to the GM already)
ruben amaro jr. (asst. to the GM already)
Dan Duquette (epstein took his job)

Any opinions? I know some of you guys have some close sources to MLB and may have some good info. Thanks

i doubt epstein will be fired or resign. Too soon and he just came off of a world series championship. There is some restructuring to be done in boston and I doubt they will hire a brand new GM to do that. Who knows though. Also, the duquette guy is dan...i got this off of the phillies website. my guess would be cashman, hunsicker, or arbuckle. In that order.
epstein is the only young buck outta that group. He is 28. He went to Yale and eventually became a lawyer in California. However, he gave up that high profile job for a low paying job in the pros. It seems like most GM's start out in a public relations department and go from there. I guess the key to getting a job like this is proving you know baseball.
The book Money Ball goes into the thoughts behind the "young GM" mentality. It seems that it's all about crunching numbers both on and off the field. Many of the rising young front office guys don't necessarily have an "on the field" mentality but they understand the business side of things. In my opinion it seems to be the new direction. In the near future I see a generation of "true" baseball people that will have that same business "tool set" and the trend will be toward that group.

Baseball has realized that in order to compete on the field you have to maximize your product off the field through a keen business mind. What you now see are young business grads that have elevated within an organization and then when promoted surround themselves with "special assistants" that have baseball minds for input. Sure sounds like corporate America.
the more i've been thinking, the more I believe that Gerry Hunsicker SHOULD be the new GM. He built Houston to what it is today. By signing the likes of Petitte (a key reason to the yankees successes), roger clemens, and carlos beltran. Those are just the main ones. He's also helped develop a lot of their young talent. He seems to be a baseball genius and is also very aggressive with trading/free agents. Which is something the phillies need. He also supposedly knows how to control a budget.

mtown - epstein would be a great choice also. However, Im almost positive boston will give him a new contract tenure. As for brian cashman, the yankees haven't been too impressive lately. He wouldn't be a bad choice though....Hunsicker is probly my choice though.
