Pin Trading... Showcases Too?

I know when we went to Cooperstown a couple of years ago, that pin trading with the guys was a HUGE hit. A couple of doors down from us lives a kid who went to a tourny in Florida last year as 18 U I think and he was showing my son all of his pins... I was thinking this was something that wasn't as popular or as big a deal with the older teams.. do Showcases and PG Events usually have this or was this more of a phenom for the Disney tourneys?
