My son has only thrown occasionally in
the last 3 months due to football and
hoops. Today he will begin throwing on
a regular basis in preperation for the
upcoming season the first week of march.
My questions are these? How many pitches
should he begin with? What should his
pitch count top out at? what are primary
areas he can work on? He is a three pitch
pitcher, FB, curve, change.Any input would
be greatly appreciated, as he could read
this later today...thanks everyone...

Hot,
If your son has only thown occaionally I would have him on a throwing routine before I would have him throw from a mound. I would get him throwing long toss a couple of times week and playing catch three to fives times a week. After a couple of weeks of this then I would have him throw from flat ground before I would have him throw from a mound. After he feels he is in throwing shape then he can throw from a mound. I would not be concerned with pitch count as much as his arm being in pitching shape.

When does your season start? Do you have any access to local pitching coaches?
I am with Tigercub. he needs to start throwing everyday (play catch) and long toss 3 days a week gradually increasing his distance each week.

Flat work first and them mound work after a couple of weeks.

He should also be tubing and stretching every single day.

The above posts are right on the money!

It's trully too easy to injure an arm at the start of a season. Take it easy!

As far as pitch count goes, pay attention to mechanics first, a pitcher can get real tired real soon in the bull pen. Remember that during a game, it takes a while to throw the next pitch (time to catch your breath). During a bullpen the pace is a little quicker, and so you can get tired, and start falling apart mechanically, much sooner.

Throw regularly (play catch), and don't be in a hurry to get on the mound.
Hotcorner,

In my never to be humble opinion, he should have started a month ago. That being said.

Week one, Long toss 5x

Week Two, Long toss 3 days , throw 3 bullpens of 24 pitches(3 sets of 8) each bull pen. ALL FB

Week three, Long Toss 3 days, throw 3 bullpens of 32 pitches (4 sets of 8) each bull pen. 4 FB, 2 Curve, 2 Changeup

Week four, Long Toss 3 days, throw 3 bullpens of 40 pitches (5 sets of 8) each bull pen. 4 FB, 2 Curve, 2 Changeup

Week Five, Long Toss 4 days, throw 2 bullpens of 60 pitches (6 sets of 10) each bull pen. 4 FB, 2 Curve, 2 Changeup, 2 FB

Do band exercises everyday.

Play every game as if it were your last
