Pitcher's & Catcher's Day

In the majors, pitchers and catchers report to spring training earlier than position players. The day they report is called Pitchers and Catchers Day.

Pitchers and Catchers always meant baseball was coming back (before we all grew our own players).....big day for pro ball fans!

As a person that celebrates "Pitchers and Catchers Report day"' every year, and even gives my wife a card, let me explain:

Newspapers used to have small blurbs about happenings in sporting events, frequently in a column form, covering multiple sports. Pitchers and catchers report to spring training ahead of position players, and the small blurb in the paper under the baseball section would simply say:

Pitcher and catchers report

This year it is February 14 as the Yankees and the other team playing early overseas start with their pitchers and catchers that day, a few days ahead of the other clubs, because their season will start sooner.

I know the Devil Rays are the perennial basement dwellers in the AL east, but you could at least still call them by their name.
