That's assuming a regular type play, say a ground ball that the pitcher makes an error on, fielding or throwing.

Let's say it was a pick-off move where he throws the ball away. That's an error but the scorer must then figure out if the run would have scored if the error hadn't been made. Say a home run is hit by the next batter, it is now an earned run
