How can a routine benefit me?

Routines are beneficial for three reasons: It give you a purpose to each pitch, it gives you a sense of control, and helps you overcome setbacks. As a pitcher, having a purpose with each pitch is crucial! One thing many pitchers leave to chance is how they think on the mound, they let the situation affect their emotions and thought process. A quality pre-pitch routine will include what you will say or think to yourself before you actually throw the ball. Having a routine helps you to focus on “this pitch” rather than leaving a pitch or even an entire at-bat to chance.

Right on Pitching Academy! Routines do many things. One such thing is that routines put the players mind in a sequence. This sequence acts like a trigger. An example of a trigger that everyone has experienced is with music and a playlist or a cd. Have you ever started playing the next song on a cd or playlist (that you have listed to often)in your head before the song actually started? The ending of the last song triggers the next song even before you hear it in real time. A routine can act the same way. It can trigger a frame of mind that is important to focus and being in the now!
