I don't have any scientific evidence to back up the following, but the majority of readings that I have seen people take are from behind the plate side of the field. It may be that the Doppler effect gives the radar gun a slightly less margin of error for things that are incoming vs traveling away from the radar source.  But I think that the difference is not significant enough to amount to a single MPH so it wouldn't matter.
