this situation seemed very odd to me

mid-season a Big 10 freshman approached his coach regarding his current & future roll on his team. the outcome of the meeting resulted in the player informing the coach he'd be seeking a release at season's end.
the player was told on the spot to clean out his locker & not let the door hit him in the a-ss.

they say timing is everything, so I guess he (player) was willing to risk that outcome

Now the ODD part -
with his spot starts and "sub" appearances he actually had OK stats (which is irrelevant, I guess), except that this player and all stats have been deleted from the team's NCAA scorebook

I thought the NCAA automated stats were official

how can this teams stats still be in balance?? did they give his rbi's, putouts, etc to someone else??

did they get opponents to remove him from "their" official box score & play by play?

can he get this season's eligibilty back, since now he "officially" has never played??

I've followed a few players who left their teams mid-season, but they were never ERASED
sounds like a coach with a serious vendetta complex

(gee, I hope his academic credits were not zapped as well)

TR, I'll take your word that you've seen it - -
as I've seen the roster bio gone but not the stats

so how would it work?
some stats are insignificant re balance, but others "must be in "balance" -

ie:
if a team scored 400 runs for the season . . the sum total for all players must equal 400, not 395

if a team had 200 rbi's . . the sum total for the players must equal 200

do teams that delete a player's record keep several sets of books like some LL teams? Confused

wonder if they have a uni with "other" across the back?

aside from the mid-season thing, guys leave all the time including some fairly high profile guys. about the only thing it could accomplish in "sticking it to the player" is making him piece together his stats from box scores.

sounds childish

I just checked 3 players who quit their teams and only 1 had his stats removed. So I guess its not good to quit during the season.
I think the question of how the coach sees you fitting on the team is fair as long as the player does it at the end of the year and he does it in a respectful manner.
Some coaches don't have a sense of humor when you quit on them.
beenthere, not sure what your point is - kissing would be in softball

like I said before, it's usual for the bio to be gone, but the stats show the team's performance in real numbers

you think the erase is ok, so is it also ok to fudge someone's numbers down a bit if a current player is a headache, or up a little if he's a great guy?

what happened to 16 runs he scored if they're no longer in the book

I suppose coach can do what he wants & the player was apparently prepared to lay it on the line and accept the consequences,

soo, should they erase Barry's if he doesn't finish the season?? or is that different??

While there may be much more to this story than meets the eye....

If it were my son and the coach had the time and venom to delete the stats I would figure that leaving might indeed be the right move.

Also would add that the "fit" we often discuss on the HSBBW is not only playing time, geography, academics, social, profile of program, level of play, but is just as importantly a proper meshing of personalities.

And Woodman...

If I had a choice I would prefer "Other" to "Current Resident" or "Occupant". That's just me..."others" may differ.

I vote for "Dude with a bat"...or "Dude on the bump"..

I simply love to play devils advocate so I have to ask this question -

has anyone considered that it might be a simple computer glitch - they are programed after all by humans - perhaps in this schools program when they delete a name the program automatically deletes everything associated with the name - no malice intended.

Just a thought.
AParent,
A COMPUTER GLITCH??? No way! That would put everything associated with this scenario out of balance. That would destroy the point/counter point of this exchange. The balance of coach vs. player would get out of kilter. Good vs. Evil cannot be reduced to a programming error or scratch on a CD. Suggesting this is a computer glitch is akin to suggesting that Jimmy Hoffa is on vacation. I say the coach’s ego and a bottle of Old Charter got in the way good judgment and he purposely highlighted the player’s stats and hit the delete button. While I’ll admit stats are worthless numbers this is different ----- we’re talking about a player’s life here. This could destroy his whole family. The player’s scrapbook would be reduced to an empty shell. The trophies and the baseballs on the mantle highlighting his college days will have to be removed. This travesty will last for generations! Someday his grandson will ask: Grandfather, what did you do while you were in college? I say fire the coach and reinstate the stats!

it does seem petty, and my guess is there's an interesting story with the kid stuck in the middle between adults

but the original question still nags me.
that ncaa automated scorebook is spreadsheet program where data entered into a few cells is "calculated" and affects many others . . it's not like the old days when you could take a marker & "black out" the guy & his numbers

for this team there was no entry for "other" in their stats to account for adjusted numbers

and, since teams archive their season data . .
ie: runs scored, stolen bases, hits, walks, team BA, etc
and deleting valid entries will just screw things up and basicly make it inaccurate and worthless . . why would ya give yourself that kind of headache?
it wouldn't even make sense to have 2 sets of stats either, just more headaches . .

I'm still scratching my head on this one, but I'll get over it soon

I know of an instance where this occurred and the individual stats were removed but the totals for the team still included the numbers.

I checked by adding up what shows currently and they were short by the numbers that were removed. In special reports the numbers were still there, the players name simply had an X in front of them.

Seems to keep the NCAA info correct overall just eliminates the information for the player that decided to leave.

Gotta agree. But funny that ya'll should bring up Jimmy Hoffa...

FBI digs in farm field after tip on Hoffa. Teamsters boss last seen July 1975 at a Michigan restaurant

(CNN) -- More than 30 years have passed since Jimmy Hoffa was last seen, but FBI agents and Bloomfield Township, Michigan, police officers were looking the former Teamsters union boss Wednesday on a rural horse farm outside Detroit.....

See, all these years Jimmy was out on a hourse ranch...
