I'm curious . . . during the recruiting process, does the coach ask/put any stock in the opinion of his existing players or committed recruits who may know or have played with a recruit?

I assume they might take opinions with a grain of salt, but also take note if the player says this kid is a hard worker, great teammate, or is hard to get along with . . .

When coaches ask such questions of my son when talking with them (I was quietly present at such meetings), I got the feeling that it had more to do with seeing what my son knew about baseball and what makes a good player rather than who those players were that my son was talking about. Seemed like kind of a baseball knowledge test question thing.
The school my son is playing for asked him lots of questions about a team mate they were interested in including questions about the family etc. It was all about the potential recruit, not at all about what my son may know about baseball.

It's my experience that many coaches want to know as much as possible about their recruits and a good source is the kids who know them. I also know of several schools who came straight out and discussed looking at Facebook, Tweets etc. If they hear/find something they are uncertain of, smart coaches will work a bit harder to get to the bottom of it. Coaches like to coach not solve issues with their team!

Same thing at my son's JUCO Pop Up. I think current players are a good resource for coaches.
If you really want to know if they want your kid set up a be recruited account and get on the blog and INVITE the coaches to his fall ball games ,put the schedule up there and remind the coaches when you are playing. My son was recruited by several d 3 and eventually went to the school that kept after him the hardest ,went to several games kept in em,ail contact with him etc etc..the b recruited sight gives you the tools to blog these coaches..you can also write things on there like ..thanks to the coaches who came to my game today...I had a good outing But struggled for a few batters in the 2nd,,blah blah blah,,I have been working on my long toss and have been lifting weights ,,my goal is to hit 87 this year by winter..you sell yourself..coaches admire kids that are involved like that..Good luck
Yes. Current players were asked about my son. He had played with several on a showcase team. What type of person is he? Is he a hard worker? Do you think he can play here? Do you think we should offer him? My son was asked the same type of questions about players recruited he had played with and against once on campus. Its just one part of the puzzle but it does happen.
We know that a local kid (new freshman) was asked about 2013 before he went on a recent visit. They don't know each other well, but we believe the kid would offer an honest opinion of our 2013 and his strengths, weaknesses, personality, and how he might fit with the team.

In this same visit we also asked HC who all from our region he's looking at. He was very honest and it gave us a good idea of the level of player he is targeting, including our son.
