My son (14u) will soon be trying out for a few high-level travel teams for next summer.  Do teams typically allow kids try out at any and all positions they wish?  Or do they limit kids to either OF, IF, or C?  And if they limit, then if a player is equally good at all positions, is there a rule of thumb about what position a player should try out for?

By way of background, my son catches 60%+ of the time for his local travel team, based on team needs - he is their best catcher by far, but the team has several good IFs and OFs.  The rest of the time he either pitches (throws low to mid 70s, with a decent change and curve) or plays 3b or CF.  I think he is equally good at all positions.  Any advice is appreciated.

Other than pitchers, they look for guys that can hit, run and catch the baseball. Oh, and can pay the fees

My son also catches at 14/15u.  Where catching is not something everyone wants to do, make sure they know he enjoys that position.  Also, your son needs to decide how important catching is to him.  We found a team where my son is the starting catcher.  If they have multiple catchers, he may not get as much time behind the dish.

My son is a lefty and he was trying out for a team. He pitched, tried out at First and outfield. They started to have the players take grounders at short. My son had not played short since middle school and was hanging back waiting till this portion was over. Head coach of the travel team told him to get in line and take his turn. It was quite a site watching trying to field and throw to first. He did OK.

They ended up offering a first and pitch position. So yes they udually let you try out for all positions. Even if your not interested in a particular one.

At that age it really depends on what the team is looking for., like stanballdad said, if you can rake and pay the fees, they will find a spot for him.  But, you might want to start narrowing it down to just two position, IMO.  Utility players are great, and often overlooked, as that they want to have a consistent team and positions at the upper levels, not too much bouncing around as far as position players go.  So, do you homework on the program, identify their need and try to fill it if it a position of interest for you son.

My son likes catching but he likes other positions too.  He will want to play wherever he can best help his team, wherever he has the best long-term potential, and wherever makes it most likely he could make whatever teams he wants and minimize bench time.  My hope is that he is allowed to tryout at all positions, and then gets on a high-level team with really good coaches who guide him toward his optimal position(s).

My son also is a primary catcher (15/16u; 9th grader). He's very good and highly experienced for his age. And is a fine lefty hitter. But this fall I got  him on a team where he played a lot of LF/RF (and 1B). Although his passion is behind the plate, and that's where I believe he has the most to offer (besides his bat), I think it is important that he can be a utlility player should there be a catcher ahead of him or that position is rotated by several players.

Agree with the above post with the following caveat. Tryout for the position he has the most success at. Make damn sure the coaches know he has had success elsewhere. This fall my 2016 was brought in to replace a corner infielder who no-showed 1 time too many (I believe it was 1 time). First game on pine. Next 4 games 1st & 3rd. Next weekend 1 3rd & OF. Had we not been rained out twice he might have hit the mound for a few innings. They play you where you were supposed to be until the team is better served having your child cover someone else's position,
