A month or so ago son received MLB Questionaire. This weekend son recieved invitation letter for a pre draft workout from same club. Have not had a personal contact from the scout. Anyone have any experiences on a predraft workouts and how many kids may be there. Just getting an opportunity is an honor and of course he will attend but was curious as to what to expect.

Your son will have a great time. He will get the opportunity to meet some of the best players in the country, both high school and college. Our experience was that typically the workouts had 25 players or less present, including pitchers. One workout only had 14 players. Each workout was a little different, but covered the same basics, probably similar to most showcases.
The players will warm up with a coach leading the drills, i.e. stretching, light running, etc.
Times will be taken on 60 yard dashes.
Typically pitchers threw first. Some workouts had pitchers throw in the bull pen only, while others had pitchers throwing to live hitters. Catchers will catch the pitchers both in the bull pen and if they throw live. Catchers also will be timed on their throws. Infielders will take infield with a coach and work through the typical drills. Hitters will get an opportunity to hit with the coaches throwing.(Typical BP, except there will be a number of the club's "upper management" present watching and filming every move your son makes.)
"Upper Mgmt" will talk to the players, oftentimes one-on-one. Some may even introduce themselves and talk to you.
Bottom Line: Enjoy it. Getting an opportunity to throw & hit in a big league park is exciting. As a parent, just watching your son throw and hit in a big league park is a thrill, no matter what happens in the draft. Good luck to you.
Diamond Mom,
Actually, some of the invites will occur just a few weeks before the draft. Logistically it can be a challenge. If the team doesn't provide the airline ticket, most won't, last minute flights are expensive if you have to travel any distance. In addition, for a high school player, typically at the end of May final exams, etc. are taking place. Some school administrators & teachers are not necessarily very cooperative allowing a player to test early to allow him to attend the workouts. Nothing is easy. Take care.
NCAA rules DO permit a major league team to give an all expense paid trip to the city of that team ONLY if you have not yet enrolled in a collegiate institution (even a 2 year college). In this regard, NCAA rules do permit, PRIOR to collegiate enrollment, a student-athlete to receive an expense paid tryout with a major league team, provided such a visit does NOT exceed 48 hours and any payment or compensation in connection with the visit was not in excess of actual and necessary expenses. Thus, you may receive an expense paid visit from a professional team, provided you participate in tryout activities that allow that club to evaluate you. You may receive such a visit either prior to or subsequent to the MLB Draft.

Additionally, you may tryout at your own expense with that team for any length of time, provided you cease your tryout when you become a full-time student at any NCAA college.
