A kid from our high school was allowed to fail for three years out of high school in short season before being released. He was a 7th round pick. A kid from a local D1 was released after one failed short season after being drafted in the 30s after senior year of college.

How long does a kid get to prove himself?

Some people think its easy, but there is a very big adjustment period.

Usually that period takes 3-5 years.

They usually leave the new draftees alone the first season, let them play with the stuff they were drafted for,  then they begin to break it down and start all over....lol.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but he will have time to adjust.

There are a lot of factors, and though I've only been watching such players for 4 years now, I've notices that those drafted out of HS are, for the most part, certainly given more time than those drafted out of college as one might expect to give the younger player time to physically mature and adjust the level of play.  It's pretty much expected that the 1st year there's some adjusting going on and 1 year performance (particularly in terms of the numbers) is not very important.  What will be important will be the "progress" such a player displays in the coming years (again, not necessarily just in terms of the numbers).  Given a player drafted in the 3rd to 5th round with decent money, the player will be give ample attention time to develop. . . I'd estimate 2 to 3 more years minimum.

BUT. . . .you really just never know.
