Scenario: a rostered player is injured in the pre-season and misses the majority of the season. He recovers and is healthy late in the season but faces the prospect of little playing time due to having to re-establish himself with no recent game experience and the fact that roles are pretty well locked in late in the season. He may be interested in a looking at a redshirt year given the prospect of very little, if any, playing time.

Question: Is the redshirt only possible at the discretion and approval of the coach? If the coach says no to the request is the player pretty much limited to accepting the burning of a year of eligibility for a couple innings played? Can he independently petition for a red shirt to some other authority? Is the only other option to quit the team and transfer, and if so would he still loose the year of eligibility because he's already rostered and also have to sit another year due to the transfer, thus effectively not playing ball for two years?

He redshirts by not playing in any games.

If the coach puts him in that's it.

Conference play is just starting and it's a long season.

We were in the same position freshman year. Coach suggested we redshirt so we did. Every coach is different.

But i would just be available to play and get whatever playing time you can get. Who knows once you get your chance you might become the starter.
Coach says no. So player hopes for an opportunity to play to present itself, then make the most of it and play his way back into regular appearances with his performance. That's the best option assuming actions follow words. Doubt remains as there's a history of only using players in the later part of season that have established themselves in the pre-season. It's unclear from past actions that the player would be given the chance to work through any rough spots that are sure to happen when getting back and used to playing in a live game situation again. Rough spots most of the other guys worked through in the past month before getting into conference. The unknown is if the coach will work with the player to develop consistency and get re-established or will one bad inning result in a month of banishment to the bench?

Agree that quiting and transfering is a bad option, but if it's the ONLY other option, would it result in both the loss of a year of eligibility for this year as a rostered player even though he hasn't appeared in a game and then a year in residence next year due to the transfer rules?
