  • (1) Monday through Thursday of the week that includes the initial date for the spring signing of the National Letter of Intent: Dead Period

13.02.4 Recruiting Periods.
13.02.4.1 Contact Period. A contact period is a period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics
department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations.
13.02.4.3 Quiet Period. A quiet period is a period of time when it is permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts only on the institution’s campus. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may be made during the quiet period.
13.02.4.4 Dead Period. A dead period is a period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus. The provision of complimentary admissions to a prospective student-athlete during a dead period is prohibited, except as provided in Bylaw 13.7.2.5 for a prospective student-athlete who visits an institution as part of a group. During a dead period, a coaching staff member may not serve as a speaker at or attend a meeting or banquet at which prospective student-athletes are in attendance, except as provided in Bylaw 13.1.9.1, and may not visit a prospective student-athlete’s educational institution. It remains permissible, however, for an institutional staff member to write or telephone a prospective student-athlete during a dead period. (Revised: 1/11/94)

D2 generally has only a dead period during NLI week, and no specified contact period.

The various periods all refer to contacts initiated by "authorized athletics department staff members." In general, it is always permissible for a potential player to call or write. A player can visit the campus, and have discussions anytime except the dead period. In principle, a 5th grader could visit and hold discussions with the coach!

Bear in mind that the periods are only meaningful for recruitable players. Regardless of period, colleges can't write (for recruiting purposes; camp invitations are fine) to players before September of their junior year, or initiate phone calls before July 1 following the junior year.

Can players and coaches discuss deals if they meet up at a showcase? I am asking about D1, D2 and D3. My son will be participating in a showcase this weekend, and 4 coaches have said they are coming to see him. Hopefully some others will take notice too.
It seems that D2 and D3 would be able to make some sort of contact but not D1. Would that be a correct assumption

During the quiet period, all coaches & players/parents may do is exchange greetings if off campus. More than that is a violation.
My son did an unofficial visit at UNLV while he was at a BKTB tournament in the Vegas area. The BB people showed him around and couldn't watch him or his video during the visit. A dead period followed immediately after the quiet period, We got a call the next day following the dead period. We were told they couldn't do any BB related stuff and that included evaluating a player. They can talk if the player calls during the quiet period.

Here is the NCAA.org's web site:

I have a senior in high school and this is all new to us. Is this why the "showcases" he has been to are now called camps instead because if they offer some type of instruction it is not considered a showcase and the D1 coaches can talk to the boys.

He is going to a "winter camp" in the next couple of weeks and would be disappointed if the coach was not able to talk to him as would we after paying for the camp and the transportation to get there.
Thanks for the info. He really likes this coach and school. He is the starting RHP this year and really would love to play ball anywhere. He is on one of the best club ball teams in Memphis. That does not always sit well with the high school coaches so he works hard to please both oraganizations. He tranferred schools during the beginning of his junior year and had to "play back" with the JV and that hurt his stats. He will be happy whereever and he knows he has our total support. We just all get confused reading the NCAA website and this site is the only place we can get correct information.
Here's the rule regarding D1 recruiting periods and recruiting actvities at camps.
13.12.1.3 Recruiting Calendar Exceptions. The interaction during sports camps and clinics between prospective student-athletes and those coaches employed by the camp or clinic is not subject to the recruiting calendar restrictions. However, an institutional staff member employed at any camp or clinic (e.g., counselor, director) is prohibited from recruiting any prospective student-athlete during the time period that the camp or clinic is conducted (from the time the prospective student-athlete reports to the camp or clinic until the conclusion of all camp activities). The prohibition against recruiting includes extending verbal or written offers of financial aid to any prospective student-athlete during his or her attendance at the camp or clinic. Other coaches wishing to attend the camp as observers must comply with appropriate recruiting contact and evaluation periods. In addition, institutional camps or clinics may not be conducted during a dead period. (Revised: 4/3/02)

So by black letter rule, a coach employed by the camp can have contact with a camp attendee during the time the camp is in session, but can not discuss offers, or perform recruiting activities. Of course, once the camp ends, if it is a quiet period, the coach can't have any in-person contact with the player.

In actual practice, I suppose that some conversations skate pretty close to the line. I certainly wouldn't worry about it; coaches know the rules, and they will guide any conversations.

So, it looks like we are in a quiet period until March 1. My son who has made some calls into some schools and has not made contact but has left his phone number. Quiet period rules indicate that only D2 and D3 schools can call back? Am i understanding this correctly?

Calls are not limited by it being quiet period, but there are other rules that guide the amount of calls a coach can make to a prospect and if they can call a prospect at all, like they cannot call until July 1 of their junior year.
For D1 schools, here is the basic rule:
13.1.3.1 Time Period for Telephone Calls—General Rule. Telephone calls to an individual (or the individual’s relatives or legal guardians) may not be made before July 1 following the completion of the individual’s junior year in high school (subject to the exceptions below); thereafter, staff members shall not make such telephone calls more than once per week.

tralpaz, your profile suggests you have a 2009 player. If so, D1 colleges can call now, and could call once per week. There are quite a few exceptions (many of them not applicable to baseball) to the general rule, but none of the exceptions would prevent D1 coaches from calling your son at this time.

13.3.1 is the relevant section of the D1 manual.
