Why not take a look at some top rated shortstops in their recruiting or showcase video to see how they throw?  Most PG profiles have videos tagged at the top of a kid's profile if he has been to a PG showcase or played in one of the PG invitation tourneys.  I just watched a couple of top 2022 SS videos, both P5 commits ranked in the top 25 in the country at the position.  One pumped on plays when you would typically have time and didn't on plays where he had to go get it and get rid of it.  The other kid didn't pump at all.  Here is the #1 rated SS in the 2023 class, Vandy committ.  3rd video from top is him taking infield....pumps on every throw....

I wouldn’t put too much stress on changing him, unless he is pumping the ball multiple times. A lot of high level guys will pump to stay in rhythm. Most ball players especially MIF will have an internal clock in their heads. They know that routine ground balls are outs as long as they smoothly work through it with good footwork. The only time that I would mention not pumping at all is if the kid pumps on a do or die slow dribbler that has to be thrown on the run. But usually that internal clock thing in your head takes over and the kid comes up throwing
