Opening Day in Upper E. Tenn. saw some District 1-AAA matchups with Dictrict 2-AAA teams. Sullivan South took 3-2 8-inning win over Greeneville scoring the winning run on a wild pitch.

Science Hill came from behind then had to hold on for a 6-5 win at Morristown East. East and the 'Toppers are expected to be at the top of their respective conferences at the end of the season. Greeneville also a pre-season top pick with East in 2-AAA.

Dobyns-Bennett gets a come-from-behind win at Sullivan North, 9-6.

Morristown West opens tonight with Sevier County to kick off a 5 day tournament that includes Cocke Co., Pigeon Forge, Unicoi Co., and Rutledge.

Killian got the start, McGahey came on in the 6th, gave up 2 runs in the 7th but hung on for the save. Motte and Shoun got the key 'Topper hits. McGahey, (VPI) went hitless but was intentionally walked twice. M-East's McBee said to have looked good on the hill using sharp overhand curve.

M-East's 3rd baseman/pitcher Corey McGinnis has committed to Carson-Newman and will sign in the spring signing period.

M-West opened Tuesday night with 14-1 win over Sevier Co. All 3 Trojan college signees starred. Kaleb Goforth (C-N) earned the pitching win, had 3 hits and 5 rbi's; Matt Spencer, (UNC) was 3 for 3 with 2 rbi's; Lance Wild (Tusculum), a pair of hits.
Rain played havoc with most of the District 1 baseball schedule Thursday, but they played at the Trojan Hardball Classic in Morristown and apparently there was quite a buzz.

13 - 15 Major League scouts (depending on whose count you use) squeezed in behind the backstop to watch Morristown West pitcher Matt Spencer and it sounds as though he didn't disappoint. The 6'4" lefthander threw 5 innings in West's 12-2 romp over Rutledge. The numbers: 1 hit, 4 walks, 12 k's and a steady 88-91 on the radar guns. Spencer, who is headed to the University of North Carolina this fall, also had a pair of hits. My source says the pros are uncertain whether Spencer is a pitching prospect who can hit, or a hitting prospect who can pitch. TeamOneBaseball.com ranks him the #1 prep first base prospect in the country. UNC says he is a two-way signee.

A former District 2 AAA star is near a Major League debut. Rick Rundles, who prepped at Jefferson Co. and was actually an early-signee with UT, is on the Expos' AAA roster. Rundles signed with the Red Sox instead of going the college route, was later traded to the Expos, and has overcome some injuries to reach the current level.

I know Hudgins very well, but I don't know Fish. Can you tell me more about him?

"If you make every game a life and death proposition, you're going to have problems. For one thing, you'll be dead a lot."
Tuesday night:

Matt McGahey bounced back strong from his loss to Sull. South last Friday with a dominating 13 strikeout 2-hitter vs Daniel Boone.

Bristol's Marcus Niddifer hit two dingers in a win over Crockett.

Dist. 2: It was "a tale of two pitchers" in Morristown where East and West squared off in a doubleheader. Game 1 West 9 East 0. Matt Spencer threw a no-hitter with 16 k's, drove in 3 on 2-run tater and a triple.

Game 2 East 4 West 2. Corey McGinnis handled things for the Hurricanes pitching a complete game 8-k beauty and at the plate, the Carson-Newman commitment drove in 3 of the 4 runs.
Dobyns-Bennett won the Crystal Springs Tournament in Tri-Cities this week. 16 teams entered. D-B whipped a lackluster Science Hill team 8-0 in one semi-final game. Duran Ferguson was the pitching hero. 'Toppers sagging.
Sullivan South busted Morristown West 12-5 in the other semi-final contest. Lefthander Mitch Bedingfield was in command for the Rebels. Aaron Hudgins sent one over the wall to pace South.

D-B won the championship game 7-1. Nathan Fritz the Indians' winning pitcher with 9 k's.

Several teams in this tourney slated for action in SportsBelle in Knoxville this weekend. Coaches are grumbling about when to use valuable pitching arms, in higher priority conference games or the "showcase" matchups on weekends.
Monday: Sullivan South has emerged as this year's District One top dog. LHP Hunter Fish claimed another major scalp shutting out Dobyns-Bennett 2-0 Monday. A 4-hitter with no runner passing second base. Dustin Mohr's solo homer late in the game sealed it. HV asked about Fish earlier. He's a lanky 6'4" "elbows and kneecaps" type pitcher. Mid-80's fastball and good command of his curve. Pitches with confidence. South has a nice compliment of seniors.

elsewhere in Region One AAA: Dist. 2: Greeneville's Chase Greenway singled home the winning run in the 7th as Greeneville came from behind to beat Morristown East 4-3 in an upset. Greeneville is atop the IMAC.
Morristown West got shutout pitching from sophomore lefthander Aaron Griffin to beat Cherokee 3-0. Andy Stewart's single and Matt Spencer's home run were key hits.
