The "Wise BBQ" discussion under the "Coach May" thread got me thinking - it'd be fun to hear some other restaurant recommendations for the cities where your boys play ball and/or from your home town.

I'll start:

In Ann Arbor, Zingermans (the Deli and the Roadhouse) and Pillars (Salvadoran - great Papusas).

I'll save my Bay Area recs for later. Lots of choices in the City (San Francisco) but also give the restaurants in the East Bay (Oakland and Berkeley) and the Peninsula a try - coming on strong.

If you're ever by the East Cobb complex in GA, stop by Frankie's Italian Restaraunt on Canton Road. Some of the best food I've ever had in a cozy little spot.

Also, The Marietta Diner in GA is a very unique experience. It has the biggest menu I've ever seen and everything is great.

I know what you mean about those Waffle Houses© attracting attention il2008.

Too bad this one didn't attract my attention just a tad sooner...

I thought I had run over a patron in the lot just before I hit the corner, but lucky me...it was just a figure that someone in Lexington,KY considers to be a snowman!

My mishap is sort of ironic since I'm a total wreck every morning before I dump one of their signature syrupy honeycombed welcome mats into my belly chased by a cup o' joe!

These aren't the greatest cuisine (although not bad) but great memories:

East Cobb - the Mellow Mushroom on Windy Hill. Love the Mushroom's salads.

Ft. Myers - Ale House. Saw some rapper there one year. Can't even remember his name, but OMG the young ladies went wild! Had some great post-game meals there. The fish dip is good. The boys like the pool tables, and not a bad place to watch a game.

Jupiter - there is a little Italian place that is walking distance from the Roger Dean fields. Can't quite remember the name of it, but we saw some of the Dirt Bags there in October right before they tied for the tournament win. They have a grilled calamari that is delicious. There's also a Caribbean-type place in the same zone that knows how to fill a glass of cold pinot grigio on a hot day!
2bmom- I went to a pizza place when I was in Jupiter and thought it was good also. Being from New York, I usually scour the south for foods I'm not used to (sweet tea, gumbo, grits, fried EVERYTHING...don't know how you guys do that LOL), but I also find it pretty funny when I see signs for "authentic New York pizza" and then it tastes like crusty Dominos. But this place in Jupiter actually had some pretty good pizza and, in my opinion, the closest I've found to real New York pizza in my experiences in the south. It was called Costello's Pizzeria

Anybody driving down I-85 or I-26 in the Greenville Spartanburg, SC area should stop at The Beacon in Spartanburg. Burgers, fries, and onion rings "a-plenty." One of those "experiences" everyone should try at least once. Sort of like The Varsity in Atlanta, another place everyone should go to at least once.

But the best burgers, fries, and fried bologna you will find in the Upstate are at Ike's Grill in the Una section of Spartanburg.

But the best food you will EVER find is at the Caro-Mi outside of Tryon, NC (just off I-26). They serve you home style with plates of fried ham, fried chicken, trout, and bowls of grits w/redeye gravy, macaroni salad, green beans, cole slaw (best you've ever eaten) etc. Only open for dinner though. And call ahead and make a reservation so you don't have to sit on the porch in the rocking chairs for too long.
About twenty years ago driving from Fort Walton Beach FL back to the airport in New Orleans (had been in NO on business) to fly back to LA we missed the ferry from Gulf Shores, AL and Dauphin Island. We had ninety minutes to kill. We went to a place signed Billy Bob's Marina and Eat, Fresh Bait. No we didn't think they has sushi. They had great BBQ ribs and the best cajun fries I've ever had. We were the only tourists in the place. It was a locals place. When I spoke it was like an EF Hutton ad. Everyone turned and looked. I didn't sound like the locals.

Holy cr@p! They're still there. It's Billy Bob's Beach BBQ and they're now franchised.

About Our Restaurant

If you're looking for mouth slobberin' good barbecue near the beach, Billy Bob's is the place.

•Dine in or carry out.
•Ain't none better no where!
•A clean, comfortable restaurant serving the most wonderful tasting barbecued meats, ribs, sandwiches, side items, salads and desserts you ever tasted.

The one meal I've had when traveling that I loved over all others and today remains my favorite of every place I've ever been is the Poopa filled with seafood gumbo at ACME's in Covington LA. I know what you're thinkin Woody but it's actually french bread hollowed out and filled with the gumbo. I've only been there twice but they're the only times I've ever ordered an entree twice in one sitting!

If any of y'all ever get around to Carolina Stadium here in Columbia be sure to visit the restaurants in the nearby Vista part of town. For some good Low Country cookin visit the Blue Marlin and order a bowl of shrimp an grits.
Ah Wood....grits are wonderfull. I grew up in NY but they're one of my favorites now. You just gotta know how to eat em.

There's a ton of ways to make em but if you stop by your local waffle house here's what to order: Two eggs over easy, hot buttery grits, toast and coffee. Take your fork and push the grits all up on top of the eggs. Salt & pepper to taste. Then take your butter knife and fork and cut up the eggs under the grits and mix it al up. When your done eating use the toast to wipe the plate down so you don't miss any of the grits and eggs. When you're done the plate should look like it came out of the dishwasher.

i second this nomination. we had our final meal here after our last CABA game last July. Awesome place and quite reasonable.
Trade me some info:
Eats near Ole Miss and The Citadel!

If you come to CA, you need to stop at any In N Out for a cheeseburger, fries and chocolate shake after the game. Go inside, you'll be surprised to find the freshest faces and biggest smiles from their couterstaff. Order your burger animal style to get the onions fried. Or not.

For the very adventuresome, try one of those Mexican places that look like a 50's garage turned restaurant. Sometimes they can be jewels! Also try the taco truck with the long line.

If you ever come to Fresno, get your deli sandwich from Piemontes, your steak at the Lime Light or the Elbow Room.

Yum! I'll be excited to hear your suggestions for me!
mikamom- Charleston has some great places to eat...my personal favorite is Hyman's. Its a seafood place right in the heart of the open air market and it's storefront is absolutely massive. I went there for the first time with my girlfriend last month and we sat at the same table as Jodie Foster and Neil Armstrong once sat at (they have a laundry list of celebrities that have eaten there). Despite the size and popularity of the place, one of the owners (it is 5th generation family-owned) approached my table to teach me a trick how to cut the flounder to maximize the meat. When I told him I was from New York, he told me his wife was originally from upstate New York and sat with us and talked for 20 minutes. He quickly got up and came back a minute later with a plate full of complimentary hush puppies and free oysters.

Definitely felt welcoming, and was a wonderful place. Charleston is one of my favorite cities.

I have to admit we did not try Hyman's©. The atmosphere and food sounds great according to J H.

I tried the crabcakes at one of those places along the marketplace J H referred to. I was very disappointed. My standard for crab is fresh caught Dungeness prepared right on the beach. That is hard to beat. The crab in Chareleston didn't come remotely close. Try the flounder?

With all of that said, Charleston is one of my favorite cities too!
