I think it depends on coaches budget and what is done. Breakfast is always provided on the road(they HAVE to get up to eat) for free and on late night ending games fed on the bus because of curfew. I have heard $30 per day or $25. So they are not always completely on their own for fending for meals. Pay day is travel for ACC tourney, regional and super regional as I do beleive that comes from the individaul conference.
Games played at home, if cafeteria is closed they get a big $8.00 (but @30+ players if adds up) or if living off campus, free pass to the cafeteria.
Last week for spring break they were home and given free meals at the cafeteria, but that gets old after awhile so the trip to Hooters was on mom and dad. I guess spending spring break in Clemson South Carolina, some diversion was necessary . Big Grin

I believe on my son's team there is no "per diem," but the team goes out as a group for all meals, with the team picking up the tab. Golden Corral, Ryan's Steakhouse, and Denny's seem to be places "of choice." On one trip, those who didn't go out with parents to eat were given $8.00 to spend at a food court at the local mall. During Spring Break, they were all given passes to eat at the hospital cafeteria across the street from the campus. They all thought it was a huge upgrade from the college cafeteria Smile

Bottom line -- I think each school does it differently depending on their team's individual budget, etc. I would imagine that the higher the budget, the more generous the handout. Low budget teams have to get creative. But as TPM said, it is a different story when involved in conference or NCAA tournaments, where those organizations pick up the tab.
Son gets $25-30 per day when on the road. They pay their own when they have team meals. Comes out of the money they are given. When they were invited to a teammate's home for a catered meal they each pitched in $10. Last year they came away with lots of extra money. Many of the hotels they stayed at had free breakfast (Embassy Suites was their favorite). There were fast food places and/or Denny's walking distance. This year they haven't been so lucky. Especially Spring Break in Houston. Lovely hotel with $13-20 breakfasts and $25 dinners. The only fast food was the mall accross the street which didn't open until late. One night they ordered Pizza delivered to the room. They've spent 50% of their nights in hotels up to this week. Finally home for 2 weeks.

True Per Diem story repeated again...

"Dad, When are you coming to school to visit?" My wife and I are loving this. He Cares!

"You Miss Us?" Eating this up now.

"No, All the other players on the team want to know?" uh,oh

"What? The other players? Why should they care?"

"Parents always take the players out to dinner. When they do we pocket our per diem money."

Geeze and we thought this was a social engagement!

The first two years of college my son received $30 per day or $120 per normal weekend road trip (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). At the time I think this was the max allowed by the NCAA. This was paid in cash prior to the bus or plane departing on Thursday. By the time the first game started there would be a few players that had lost all their money in poker games.
In his third year of college he had a new coach and the new coach changed the meal plan. All meals were provided by the team and all players were expected to eat as a team... no per diem. That eliminated the meal money poker games.
I personally like the per diem because my son always returned with money in his pocket, not from the poker games but mainly from eating with us because we made most of the away games and Dad always paid. I gladly bought his meals and let him save his per diem. The way I looked at it if he saved his per diem that was spending money I didn’t have to give him the following week.
If the team is playing in post season, and the school sessions are out, the players were paid a per diem whether they were at home or away. This post season money continued all during his college career. I think it was $30 per day too.

my son's team meal plan seems to be 25 per day unless they eat as a team.

Spring break it was 25 a day and no team meals. Son asked for a grill and I went out and bought the "baby" weber propane grill. Save him a bunch of money and he eat steak and chicken most nights and became a very popular player as became the chef for some of the guys.

Great little grill for the baseball player. Went out to the parking lot and truely "tailgated" with his new grill. Very portable, he will use it this summer when the host family does not cook.
Older son's D1 was generally $28/day on weekend road trips and coach paid for team dinner on week day trips, although one night after a bad loss to Baylor he sent them home without supper. Smile That still cracks me up! Breakfast was usually included at their hotel.

Younger son's JUCO coach paid for every meal as a team and just gave them a max amount...$7.00 for lunch and $8.00 for dinner I think. Hotels usually provided breakfast. If not, coach paid for it. They always had plenty to eat.
