When Junior was getting a lot of recruiting interest, we both had the opportunity to talk to a lot of coaches. SIU scouted junior twice and both times he din't show that well (found out later, he had mono). Coach Callahan called me personally after the first outing and said, "Mr. Porter, we've heard some really great things about your son from sources I consider the most reliable in baseball. He didn't show that well last weekend, and I wanted to ask you man to man, if you thought that was his typical outing or would we be best off seeing him again. I'm hoping you'll give me an objective answer."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Well, his pitching coach saw Junior a week later and he still didn't impress. I called coach Callahan on Monday and apologized for wasting his time. He was very gracious and explained to me that he was perplexed because one of the scouts that had told him about Junior told him to offer him over the phone before someone else snatched him up. He went on to explain that although he thinks this scout is probably right, they won't be offering Junior a scholarship because of what they had personally seen.

He was unbelievably gracious and just about as straight up a guy as a parent could hope for.

I wrote a letter to the AD that day, the only letter I ever wrote to an AD, about what a great experience it was being recruited by Coach Callahan, in spite of the fact that he withdrew a cursory offer.

In true Coach Cal style, about two weeks later he gave me a call and thanked me for such a kind letter.

College baseball just lost a good one.

My sincerest condolences to the Callahan family.
My Son was also recruited by Coach Cal and his staff.
He was one of the few Coaches that truly "recruited" the parents.
Our official visit was well planned and included sessions with the AD, the Director of the Athletic Tutoring program and the Conditioning Coach.

He really knew how to make people feel special.

Truly one of the 'good guys'!

Our thoughts and prayers for Dan and his wife and daughters and to the entire SIU baseball family.

2013 completed the recruiting questionnaire some months ago and we were hoping to make an unofficial visit next year. Great reputations in baseball/engineering made sense for our player.
