General questions -

1. If you were offered a 50% athletic ride on let's say a $50k bill. Once accepted to the school you're offered 50% merit based on SAT or GPA, or 50% based on FA. Does the 50% athletic ride come off the remaining $25k (another $12.5) off, or does it match the 50% to make it completely free?

2. If a coach offers 50% and the player ends up getting 50% in merit, some award, or need based, do they have to honor the 50% athletic scholarship still? Can they knock it down to 25% based on the idea that they offered that amount to make it affordable?

PABaseball,

In my son's case (10 years ago), yes to 1) above in the first part.   Athletic was to be calculated after academic scholarship was awarded at a D1 school post ED application.   This was annoying for us as there were a lot of little steps that had to be done in sequence and they had interdependecies in the application process.   So son had to apply ED to get accepted and then the academic scholarship awarded with some financial wiggle room for the school.   This was a complicated process and we got different answers from the coaches, admissions and the athletic liason who's job it is to make this easy.  I was pulling my hair out.    We kept going back and forth.    My son considered this school for physics and chemistry but ended up passing on it for a D1 HA engineering school that was need based FA (approximately same amount as 50% as the other school).    Problem solved.
