I have a son who is a senior this year in high school in Southern California. He is playing on one of the scout ball team, and this is his 3rd year. As you know, playing in scout ball is a big time commitment. Typically, we drive up one to two hours each way, and play two 7-inning games on top of BP and fielding practices. All of these add up to 9-10 hours every Sunday in fall. The competition is good, but I was wondering if it is really worth spending this much time every week for the next 2 months.
He played in TOS and Area Code Games this summer and had already made a verbal commitment to a DI college program last year. So the only upside is the chance of being drafted.
Until now, I have not really seen many pro scouts at those games, other than the scouts on the playing teams. I see many college coaches, but that does not matter to my son anymore...
I hear that the participation may lead to being selected on the All-Star tournament at the end of the season, which can give good exposure to pro scouts. Is that the only upside? My son has secured a spot for WWBA tournament in Jupiter already...
My son wants to spend as much time as possible in the weight room during the off-season. So typically, he is not in the best condition to play baseball on Sundays this time of the year, which is another factor.
I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.
