I have a friend whose son is an academic all-American. He is also a senior rhp with pretty average stuff; about an 80 - 82mph fastball and an average curve ball. Div. II schools are following him, but, he and his father have only selected Div. I schools mainly because of their academic reputation. However, he would like to play baseball if at all possible at one of these schools. My question is, how do you go about becoming an invited walk-on verses a "just show up walk-on".

Duke (in particular) seems to recruit players from their summer/winter camps. They also do a majority of their signing (it seems) in the spring. They have a couple of camps coming up in December. I'd attend which ever one fits him best and make sure he shows up in baseball condition. It will get him in front of the coaching staff and make him known which is a critical part of the recruiting process.

25 of the 33 players on Duke's roster last year attended Perfect Game events. Not sure how many ever attended the Duke Camp, but I do know many of those 25 did not.

Duke along with many other DI's attends lots of our events and recruits lots of their players from these events.

Players do, at times, get recruited by attending college camps, but it is not a common practice. College Camps can be very good for learning how to improve your skills and most DI schools hold Camps.

Sometimes talented players are invited to these camps because they have been seen elsewhere. These are the players who attend the college camps who are most likely to be recruited.

The most important ingredients to be recruited by Duke are talent and academic achievement. If any college relied on their camps to recruit their players they would have a hard time competing. Especially schools like Duke who have very rigid academic standards and play in a power house conference.

That said, we believe College Camps are very worthwhile. A player can learn a lot at the many good college camps around the country.
My son's best friend attends Duke and is fortunate to be in their baseball program.
I can tell you what I know.
Academics is first and foremost. They teach their classes geared towards 1300+ SAT scores. Most walk ons do not make the program, I know from someone that came hoping to play baseball and probably will not play as a walk on. Due to the conference they play in, above average talent is necessay.
40K+ a year to attend.
I would suggest with his average fastball and average curveball to be realistic and pursue D2, if he wants to play ball after HS.
