I have some fond memories of LSU. LSU is a powerhouse. LSU is all about winning. LSU has GREAT fan support. LSU has great players on great teams. All those things can mean a great college experience for those players that are fortunate enough to play for the Bayou Bengals. However that greatness can lead to disappointment for some good players too. I personally would not (and did not) get excited about my son playing for LSU. They were on his dream list of five schools and I had a daughter that lived in Baton Rouge. Sounds like a great fit doesn’t it? I marked them off his list. Don’t take this as a slam against LSU because I would be very proud if my son could factor into their success. Their greatness made me cautious. While my son played many games against LSU and was very successful when he did so, that doesn’t mean my son could have played FOR LSU. With their reputation and their state funded scholarships they have the ability to recruit MORE than enough quality players into their program and these “extra” players could find themselves as little fish in a big pond. I’ll be the first to admit there is great talent on the field at Alex Box stadium but I also get the feeling there is some wasted talent on their benches. Ain't skeered? Then go for it.

jbbasebal, I am sorry for quoting your post to death, but I thought ALL three of those statements needed to be spread out a little, because, I'm sure they make many of us "old timer's" smile. I did.
And, on the transcript, they want to check to see if your son can get admitted and handle the academics before they spend recruiting time.
More importantly, to you, they have to have a transcipt before they can invite you for an OFFICIAL visit.
So, you can read into that transcript request that an offcial visit may be in the works.
I think my son got two letters before signing from the school he attends. He got a handwritten note from the coach after he committed and a letter with his NLI. My wife has a huge box somewhere of letters and all sorts of "stuff" from other schools. Mail is cool. It means you got noticed. In the end, the mail had no relationship to the decision, and rarely ever does. Go where you are wanted, and play for people who know how to coach and appreciate good student athletes.

Also, countless guys played college baseball who didn't get a call on 9/1. Reminder, tell you juniors not to ignore phone calls from unknown callers on 9/1 (assuming that still happens).
Side note... I wasn't expecting to find one from 2006 that featured TPM (I think her son was pitching for Clemson at this time), Coach May, Midlo Dad, PGStaff, TRhit, and J H.

Thanks MADad for that sentiment. The experiences of others on this board have been a huge help in lowering my '22's anxiety re # of calls, etc. It will be interesting to gauge whether this year is different and I'll share any interesting finds w/o attribution, of course.
Lived this 7 years ago with high expectations after a suburb sophomore HS season and summer...............and "crickets" except for a few "hi how ya doing" emails. No traction until late summer of rising jr year.
Going to live it again tomorrow with higher expectations due to his stature in class, but still reserved given the changes in the atmosphere.
Good luck to everyone going through this as it is not easy.

CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL. You can't control that State U wants Jimmy Joe, even though everyone and their dad knows that Matty Moe is a better baseball player. Sometimes things are not as they seem, and most people don't know 1/2 of the story let alone the whole one.

One question - do coaches expect recruits to answer with specifics when asked what other schools they are talking to? Is it advantageous to list them out?
If a coach asks who all you’re talking to, yes, you tell them. But be 100% truthful because they all know each other and will make calls and verify.
@wildcat I recommend being honest but it’s not a graded test. 
If he misses one or two, it’s fine...it’s more to give the coach a sense of the level of interest your son is receiving. If the list is long, the coach might follow up with, “ how soon are you looking to make a decision.”

Yes, definitely. From experience, they all talk so be up front about it. You don't necessarily have to give details, but be honest.
Yes, be honest about who is talking to you. It’s good for schools to realize they have some competition in recruiting you. It also confirms for them that you might be a good fit.
If a D2 is reaching out to you and you let them know you have offers from Central Michigan and Ohio State, that tells them something. Same thing if Ohio State reaches out and all you have are D3 offers. Generally that kind of thing doesn’t happen. It’s good when you have offers and or interest from several different schools in the same conference.
The 9/1 date isn't that significant anymore because of all the different methods of contact before 9/1, but I enjoy bumping a thread that started in 2006.
Annual reminder: tell your 2023 son to answer all unknown callers over the next few days. It will probably just be a final warning to renew his car warranty... but you never know.
The other day my 2023 son talked to the assistant coach at the school he is committed to. He told him that on 9/1 to not be surprised to get a call from the head coach and pitching coach.
But do not exaggerate. If you received an invite to a camp, that is not interest from a school if asked by a coach. If you have not had a direct conversation about you specifically, then it is not true interest like they are asking about. Also, you do not have to share what they are offering. Some will ask what the other school is offering and I think you can say a scholarship or choose to say I'd rather not share that but it is baseball money, if it is.
They are all connected, even with their enemies. They talk more than you would ever think they do. They will ask each other if they are recruiting a certain kid.
Couple of questions here. A couple schools that were lower on my son's radar reached out to him. Does he need to let his travel and HS coaches know about every school he's talking to? Just don't want to overwhelm them as I'm sure a lot of the kids on the teams are getting the same attention today (probably more actually).
No. Unless they ask. Actually, less is best across the board.
Recruiting is individual, so keep all info in the family.

If they are actively involved, then yes. But your son should own the process of communicating with them. Whenever an intro or communication came through my kids' travel ball coaches my kids' would contact the coach. You don't want it going through the coach after the initial contact IMO.
My oldest also ran into a "too many cooks in the kitchen" issue. This happened when too many of his coaches were speaking with the same coach and not on the same page with each other. Something to keep an eye on.

Hah! Already running into this, sorta. One coach is telling the school TBPT son that he's their next catcher and another coach is telling the school they need to look at him as a pitcher. The coach pushing the pitcher angle played MLB with the HC and they are close friends.

And if your kid is like mine was, you should ask him if he has set up voicemail on his phone. Gen Z doesn't really do telephone calls. My kid was a couple of weeks into the main recruiting push when I asked him if he had any voicemail messages from coaches. His response was a blank stare. He set up his voicemail box a few minutes later--and it proved pretty useful...

THIS. My kid is at a "HA" and it took him a week to figure this out.
Also don't stress contact day. My son's at his best fit school and they didn't contact him for a couple weeks after 9- 1

Haha, my kid checked his voicemail mid-September and there were 3 messages from HCs... oh well, that's not a good first impression!
