From what little research I've done, admission to the service academies appears to be a difficult, lengthy process. Is there any streamlining for athletes with the proper academic credentials?

Service academies really aren't that interested in athletic accomplishment, per se. They are looking for the best and brightest young men and women that have a desire to serve their country. If you can score touchdowns or hit HRs it's a small bonus.
Begin with scholastic open houses at your son's HS. My 2016's had the Naval Academy and Coast Guard Academy attend last week. They can give you a tremendous amount of detail and insight into joining a service academy as your college choice.

This isn't really the case. These coaches do have "Blue Chips" that they can use every year if you are a really good player. Athletics can get you in, but athletics don't necessarily have the same importance as a regular school.
