In our area, no the umps have made them use a full hockey style mask. They made a kid change last week. I don't know if that is the situation everywhere though.

No. Catcher's helmet/mask combinations must provide ear protection and be NOCSAE-certified as a unit.

Two piece is allowed, but not a skull cap. The cap portion must protect both ears and must have been designed to be used with the mask.
Not allowed in Texas High Schools either. My son loves the skull cap, but I understand why they ban them. He only uses it in select tournaments. A kid that does not have enough experience catching will oftentimes turn his head when ball is tipped or when it hits the ground, which in turn could lead to getting hit in the ear or side of the face. Only very experienced catchers should use them.
