I will go with what I know so far. Others can chime in on City Section teams. I have not seen/heard much regarding the SF Valley teams.

Maramonte

I have not seen any team from Winter or fall ball but based on what I know from returnees. I am going with:

1. Royal: Very strong pitching led by Berglund.
2. Simi: Lost some key Sr’s, but the place is a baseball machine year in and year out.
3. Moorpark: Has some promising Jr’s, NP may take this spot. Coaching questionable.
4. NP: Has some good new kids coming into the program, which may be in a little bit of disarray.
5. The Rest.

Pacific View

1. Oxnard: Has a very deep lineup of Sr’s and Jr’s. Will be a force, deep top to bottom
2.. Hueneme: Jesus Valdez and a number of the other “Bombers” but not deep enough to compete with Oxnard. Next year will be dismal.
3. Camarillo: Always has a strong program.
4. Rio Mesa: I hear they look pretty good. Won league last year by a default from Oxnard, and beat out Hueneme at the end. Could be number three.
5. The rest.

Channel

1. Buena: Has a good blend of Sr’s and Juniors. Lack of dedicated coaching may prevent them from reaching their potential.
2. Ventura: Strong group of returning Vars. Sophs should be competitive. JV team was strong last year, which should add some depth.
3. Santa Barbara: Like Ventura has a strong group of returning Soph’s. with some Sr’s and could beat out Ventura and Buena if they play well.
4. San Marcos/DP: Both lost too many Sr’s.

the three best pitchers in the league are 1 ea at Buena, Ventura and SB. Each one can win any time they take the hill.

Foothill

1. Valencia
2. West Ranch
3. Hart
4. Saugus
5. others

This is a SWAG. Not close enough to really know. Will be a dog fight.

Tri-Valley

Very weak group but this is the one year that Oaks Christian has a chance to beat St Bonnie. St Bonnie has lost a key starting pitcher for nearly all of the season. Oaks is thin on pitching.

Others can fill in the blanks and other leagues.

For as deep as SoCal is in baseball this forum is a joke!

Lets hear it from the center of the USA Baseball Universe!

BOF,
That would be Buckel, Berglund is in the pro ranks.
Moorpark's strength is the seniors, Swenson, Barker, Moe, Palacios. Barker is a high 80s touching the 90s type. Swenson doesn't throw hard but knows how to pitch. Higginbotham if healthy will do well. He throws moderately hard, has a very deceptive motion and can handle the big games. The juniors will certainly contribute, but this year is the program's high point for a while.

Westlake has Cuneo who knows how to pitch and Nieves who was a high 80s lefty when I saw him last year along with Yelich and some other good hitters. There's a few pretty good 1-2s in the league. Westlake's coach tends to run them out of some innings. Westlake probably has the top talent, while Moorpark probably has the most depth of talent. I'm assuming that several of Westlake's players didn't play in summer VIBL.

Agoura came in second in summer VIBL playoffs so they've got something this year.

D'oH...Hey they both start with B. Roll Eyes

We played Oxnard today. They have more Jr's than I thought, I think 4 starting Sr's 1 or two of them pitchers. Their pitching is deep, but not overpowering, but I thought they looked better with the bats. I was also talking to a dad there who knows Hueneme and he said he thought that once you get to the bottom of their order, say past their 5 hitter they are weak. They might hold a team to 2-4 runs, but they are going to have problems scoring.

I went through the early signees based on pgxchecker and it was interesting that Agoura had 4 early signers, Westlake 2, and Newbury Park, TO, Royal and Simi had 1 each, while Moorpark and Calabasas didn't have any that I noticed. Moorpark has a couple players that I'd consider early signing caliber.

That's what makes these early predictions fun. We really have very little chance of being right, and it brings out things that a lot of us weren't aware of.

I've heard NP has a pretty good sophmore pitcher throwing in the upper 80s to go along with Sherfy. I think his brother went to Agoura. I think the league is wide open this year which is very different from what I thought a few months ago.
Brower is a RHP pitchability guy who bats lefty if I remember correctly. He should be good enough to play a role on the mound at NP this season. I guess that makes 2 for NP. I'm a bit surprised that Dennis from NP hasn't signed yet. He's a pretty good hitter. You can also add Bollar from TO and Wise from Westlake to the list.

As seems to happen almost every year the talented kids from Moorpark are left out of the signings.

Early in the pre-season I start picking coaches I like rather than talent.

First, If Rick Brail from Tesoro ever got some pitching he would win everything... The guy can teach hitting. (Anthony Hutting)

I like Coach Bret Kay form J-Serra in San Juan Capistrano Valley... remember his name folks.. you will hear it again. He just seems to pull the most from all his players.

I like J-Serra this year.

I like Tom Faris in Dana Hills.. (Peter Tago is his guy but he is a great coach and will pull guys up to the level he needs to suppot Tago.)..((my son played club ball for Tom and he is the real deal!)

Zamora, at Capistrano Valley has his usual core of talented guys... If the pitchers can hit the strike zone then he is a consecutive CIF winner because the velocity is there. I like Brian Clough (LHP/2010/UCI....Guliespie is no dumb ***)

Other than that I dont know that the OC has what the greater LA has or the San Diego region has.

I always love the IE... there is just some real talent out there....

Sabol has no team around him at Aliso... he will make a state record in walks this year. (IMO)

Mission Viejo HS has some all around solid guys. If the coach make the right line up with the pitchers in support then Ashcraft is going to have a break out year. ( Take a look at Saenz and Kuhl)
Lopes transfers from LA Times below.

Well I guess I will reorder my pick for Valencia, and Edison certainly gets better....

----------------------------------------------------

Call it the blockbuster transfer for 2010.

Christian Lopes, a junior shortstop at Valencia who's considered a potential first-round draft choice for 2011, checked out of school on Friday and is expected to enroll at 2009 Southern Section Division I runner-up Huntington Beach Edison, Valencia Coach Jared Snyder said.

Also joining Lopes is his brother, Tim, an outstanding sophomore infielder. They're expected to enroll at Edison when school resumes on Tuesday.

If it happens, Edison will become the overwhelming favorite to win the Division I title. The Chargers already return junior pitcher Henry Owens, considered the top Southland pitching prospect for 2011, and junior outfielder Eric Snyder, a UCLA commit.

Edison Coach Steve Lambright said his athletic director told him several weeks ago about an inquiry from the Lopes family but nothing official had happened.

"He's the best player we've ever coached or seen," Jared Snyder said. "He'll be missed."
Did the whole family move? Otherwise they may not be eligible. There are ways around the rules but generally they have to move. There have been players who transferred thinking they would be able to play only to find out later that they were ineligible.

Even if it works out I think Sondheimer is off base. There's no such thing as an overwhelming favorite to win CIF div I. There are too many things that can go wrong for even the best of teams, like facing a stud pitcher who is on that day.

BTW, I'm fairly, but not absolutely certain that Barker from Moorpark has committed to BYU.

What do you think an entire week of rain is going to do the teams who are trying to get ready for the start of the season?

I have to assume the family moved since it said both boys were enrolling.

As far as the rain goes, we are way ahead of the curve from last year since they changed the contact rules. My son's team is doing 2 hour practices 3-4 days per week now and they are playing 9 inning winterball games. We actually shut my son down for a month just to get some rest in since he was so busy in the fall with recruiting activities. We will get in a couple of tournaments prior to season start, weather permitting.
JSerra is a private Catholic school in Orange County that plays in one of the most competitive leagues in So Cal (and probably the country). They finished at the top of their league last year and lost in the second round of the SS playoff's. I don't know, but suspect this was a disapointment for them. They had lots of Sr's on their squad last year so I would think that there is a lot of opportunity for a newcomer.
Doughnut man, this was in today's LA times sports blog.

Baseball: JSerra ready for another big season
January 25, 2010 | 10:06 am
Yes, Huntington Beach Edison figures to start out as No. 1 in Southern California when the baseball season begins, but San Juan Capistrano JSerra shouldn't be overlooked.

The Lions won their first Trinity League championship last season, finished 22-7 and have lots of returnees, including a highly touted junior outfielder, Tyler Krause, who transferred in from Arizona and has his own web page.

UCLA-bound junior Austin Hedges is switching from second base to catcher. The Lions also have two Cal State Fullerton-bound players in senior pitcher Grahamm Wiest and junior outfielder Clay Williamson.

So don't think there's anything certain in baseball when one solid pitching performance can beat anyone.
