Stop trying to read into everything. You will drive yourself crazy. We're not there. We cant read it for you. I've been though the journey with two kids and five sports. You're far from the first parent who doesn't see what the coach sees. There's also more going on that just in the scrimmage. Your son has it right. He has to work hard an earn it. Now relax. I hope you're not discussing all this negativity with your son. It can distract from his focus. In the three years my son played varsity the starters at the beginning of the season were never all the same starters when the playoffs started.

No, i understand what talking to him about these things do. Pardon my ignorance but what else can be going on than the scrimmage?

Every coach is differenti, there are no guidelines other than:

1- Have your son give 100% at all times
2- You never want to approach the coach over these issues
3- Enjoy every minute

It will work out in the end, be patient and play hard!

I will never approach the coach. That is my sons job if hes not happy. He works **** hard. Now, enjoying every minute..lol. I just wanted some insight on some of you vets if this is normal?

Well, it happened on my team my senior year. Player moves in, projected starter is moved to second position. The logic: New player in his primary and returning player in his secondary were better than returning player in his primary and other returning player in his primary.

Sometimes taking a little loss in one position means a greater gain in another.
If nothing else it prepares your son for what he will face in college ball. Every year our sons have to fight off talented Junior College guys who come in, sometimes even at mid year as well as a possible outstanding freshman. It will be like this from now on.

As far as being "normal", there is no "normal". Each coach or high school program is different. Some coaches are very loyal to guys that have been with them and some just play the best guy or plays guys in the position where it most helps the team, even if one is new to the program.

As others have stated just tell your boy to keep busting his tail, be a team player and it will all work out in the end.
