Western Branch 2, Grassfield 1

Western Branch will advance to the Eastern Regionals by virtue of Great Bridge's earlier win over Indian River.

Shane Johnsonbaugh pitched the first six innings allowing five (maybe six) hits and one (unearned) run. Nick Thompson faced three batters in the seventh inning to pick up the save. Cody Cox pitched well but suffered another tough loss.

Grassfield scored first in the top of the second inning. Cody Cox led off the inning with a single but his courtesy runner was thrown out attempting to steal second. Jason Ingrahm walked, Rian Ellis reached on an error, the next batter struck out and with 2 outs, Dereck Meese's double into left field brought Ingrahm home. Grassfield tried to score Ellis on the same play but he was thrown out at home in a well executed 7-6-2 play to end the inning.

Grassfield threatened in the top of the third with bases loaded and only 1 out. Zack Jack led off the inning with a single. With one out, Jordan Miller singled up the middle and Jason Carter walked to load the bases. Johnsonbaugh struck out the next batter and the sixth batter of the inning flew out to right field to end the threat. The only other runners to reach for Grassfield were Nykolai Ellis with a double in the fifth and Jason Ingrahm in the sixth.

Western Branch pushed two runs across in the bottom of the third inning. Garrett Brooks and Brandon Doggett led off the inning with singles. Brooks advanced to third with a steal. The next batter struck out swinging. Shane Johnsonbaugh's ground out (6-3) brought Brooks home and when Grassfield attempted to make a double play on Doggett who was going to third, the ball went errant and Doggett reached home. The only other runner to reach for WB was Alex Hunt who doubled in the 4th.

to all:

Both games utterly AMAZING!!!! Every one out there had to have enjoyed watching these games. There was no way not too. I get if the team lost or their child didn't play etc.. a parent/grandparent/family member was upset yet the entire picture of this is that its was much better than LAST YEAR! These teams just keep getting better and better. Wow..... I say a JOB WELL DONE TO ALL FOUR TEAMS clapping
SED Tournament Championship Game

Great Bridge 2 Western Branch 0

Western Branch never was able to get their bats going, just seemed flat. Anthony Stokes (GB) pitched 5 innings for the win; Connor Jones pitched 2 innings in relief. The only hits for WB were a single by Garrett Brooks to lead off the first inning and a single by Shane Johnsonbaugh in the 4th.

Richard Eisenhower pitched a great game for WB, holding the District Champions to 5 hits in 6 innings. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending upon for which you were rooting), GB strung 3 hits together to open the second inning. Anthony Stokes hit a slow dribbler down third, Cam Czech hit a line drive double in the rf gap, scoring Stokes, and Hunter Higgerson hit a single to bring Cam Czech home. Brian Beard singled in the 3rd and Anthony Stokes singled up the middle in the 4th but neither reached home. Consider it great pitching to hold the top team to 5 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings. Eisenhower just needed run support. (Do I sound like GF?)

Good luck to both Great Bridge and Western Branch next Monday. I hope that Great Bridge keeps on its winning ways and that Western Branch refinds that path.

First and Second Team All District announcements were made and I am sure that someone, with a complete list, will post them soon.
I think that is the best outing for Stokes this season. If he is rounding into the form that was expected at the beginning of the season that is a nice bump for GB. They are really getting strong pitching and timely hitting. The game v Cox should be outstanding.

WB has a pretty tough draw at regionals and I think they can do it. If they get through Ocean Lakes the game against Mechville (assuming they beat Norview) will be can't miss.

It would be a very strong statement for the district if these two play against each other again this season. I will be rooting for it.
WB Reporter:
Nice recap considering the VA Pilot had nothing for us this morning.
Sounds like Eisenhower did a very good job for WB. All I have heard about this year is Thompson and Johnsonbaugh. What year is Eisenhower? Is he coming back too?
I know Stokes from GB graduates, but what year is Connor Jones for GB? From your write-up he pitched two hitless innings.

It's pretty tough at places like GB and WB to crack the lineup anytime. But at both places it seems to me they will play underclassmen if they feel they are ready. Between the two only 5 or 6 Sr's this year. They are getting it done with major contributions from Jr's and Soph's.

This can be the result of one particular class being loaded but I think for these guys it is by design. Year after year they return 5 or more key contributors. Using games like last night to get kids into a spotlight game against a top opponent is evidence of the strategy of grooming players to be ready when the time comes.
Thanks WB Reporter and all the other people on this site who update us on a daily basis.

It's truly ashame that the local media does not do a better job reporting about our local HS baseball teams as they do when it's basketball and football season.

The media on the other side of the water is outstanding and is always reporting on all the local high sports.......including female sports.
