There are a number of very good restaurants in downtown Asheville and at the Biltmore Estate on the outskirts of town. Principal among them in my opinion is Cúrate Tapas Bar at 11 Biltmore Avenue, downtown. The executive chef and service manager came from one of the world's finest restaurants, El Bulli in Catalonia, Spain. The food at Cúrate is truly exceptional; as good as you'll find anywhere.

Also not to be missed for dessert: French Broad Chocolate Lounge, around the corner from Cúrate at 10 S Lexington. If you go there and don't order a "liquid truffle," you're making a BIG mistake!

Moving to the other end of the spectrum and to Spartanburg, there is a local drive-in called the Beacon that is a Spartnburg landmark. If your cardiologist allows one splurge a year, you might make this your choice.

Another thought: If your travels take you a little farther south to nearby Greenville, the dowtown there is dotted with very fine restaurants.

Enjoy!

Depends on what you want.  Best burgers and fries in Spartanburg are at Ike's Grill. The Grill on 221 (near Dorman HS) also makes great burgers and fries.  (Go to The Beacon more for the experience than the food.)  Best pizza would be Mellow Mushroom, The Apollo (Greek), or Yannis (Greek).  Good greek sandwiches, etc. at Yannis.  For a very good Cuban sandwich shop try A Caribbean Sweetness.  Best BBQ would probably be Bubba's BBQ and Bash (mustard base).  For great salsa, burritios, quesadillas, hot dogs, etc. try Taco Dog.

If you want some great food between Spartanburg and Asheville the Caro-Mi outside of Tryon, NC.  Great fried ham, chicken, trout, and vegetables all served homestyle in bowls or on trays.  Green River BBQ in Saluda, NC also has great BBQ and MANY other specialties.

If you want some of the best BBQ you will ever eat, drive about 15 miles South of Florence on Highway 52 to Fatbacks BBQ (Fri and Sat only I think ) in Coward, or a couple miles further south to Schoolhouse BBQ in Scranton (open all week).

If you've never tried mustard-based barbecue, you should. It's hard to find much beyond the South Carolina line.

I don't know about the best food but something we have done when visiting universities is to eat individually or as a team in the school's cafeteria. It's a geat way to get a feel for the student body and what kind of food the student might be subjected to. It also works great as a team. Many of them are all you can eat and includes drinks, dessert, and no tip expected with seating for the whole team and families. Some schools will even offer a discount for a large group/team if done in advance. So far VA Tech is hands down the best and should be on your must do list.

Ditto on Red Bone Alley.  It used to be owned by the same guy who owns the Florence Team in the Coastal Plains league.  Not sure if that is still true.  There's also a place right down the street from Red Bone that is really good.  Just can't remember the name.
