Any reccomendations for good places to eat in Spartanburg SC? Also plan on spending some time in Asheville NC so any reccomendations there would also be great!

There are a number of very good restaurants in downtown Asheville and at the Biltmore Estate on the outskirts of town. Principal among them in my opinion is Cúrate Tapas Bar at 11 Biltmore Avenue, downtown. The executive chef and service manager came from one of the world's finest restaurants, El Bulli in Catalonia, Spain. The food at Cúrate is truly exceptional; as good as you'll find anywhere.
Also not to be missed for dessert: French Broad Chocolate Lounge, around the corner from Cúrate at 10 S Lexington. If you go there and don't order a "liquid truffle," you're making a BIG mistake!
Moving to the other end of the spectrum and to Spartanburg, there is a local drive-in called the Beacon that is a Spartnburg landmark. If your cardiologist allows one splurge a year, you might make this your choice.
Another thought: If your travels take you a little farther south to nearby Greenville, the dowtown there is dotted with very fine restaurants.
Enjoy!

Can I jump on this one and ask the same question about Florence, SC? We'll be visiting Francis Marion University in a couple of weeks.

When I was growing up in the '60s, no trip to Grandma's house in Spartanburg was complete without a visit to the Sugar-n-Spice. I haven't been there in 25 years, but I think they're still there. I was always of fan of the fish basket, but the hamburger steak was a winner too.
Wow thanks for the recco's mouth is already watering...now if we can just get some warm baseball weather sound like it could be a perfect trip.
I don't know about the best food but something we have done when visiting universities is to eat individually or as a team in the school's cafeteria. It's a geat way to get a feel for the student body and what kind of food the student might be subjected to. It also works great as a team. Many of them are all you can eat and includes drinks, dessert, and no tip expected with seating for the whole team and families. Some schools will even offer a discount for a large group/team if done in advance. So far VA Tech is hands down the best and should be on your must do list.

Biggerpapi,
In Florence we liked Stefano's and Red Bone Alley.

Try Carolina Barbecue. It's just down the street from USC Upstate and used to be great down-home style food, but I can't speak for it recently. Don't go there looking for a bottle of wine, but you can get a quick loan at 50% interest next door. The neighborhood's fine, though.

One last comment about Spartanburg. If you want a meat and three, go to Wade's Rest. But, if you go there you must try their sourdough rolls. Piping hot, covered with honey, syrup or jelly they are Fantastic.
