Many amateur baseball organizations are starting their spring training, consider the “ROVING CATCHER COACH” concept for your catchers; across your teams/ and age groups. Practice your catchers together, separately from their teams. Have a catcher coach teach proper catching techniques at your location.

It is rare that catchers receive the same level of instruction as every other player. Yet, we PLAY BALL... and all those dynamics change at game time and with each game .. suddenly the catcher becomes prominent... Every pitch, Every game!!!

So the position that got the least amount of attention, suddenly is the most important player on the field!!

This problem is common and largely due to coach's expertise and allotted practice time.

One area in baseball that receives little attention from coaches is teaching proper catching techniques. In general, there is not enough practice time devoted to it and the result is a lack of quality catchers at all levels. The reasons for this can be attributed to a number of things, but mainly, the blame falls on coaches for not setting aside practice time and a coach's lack of catching knowledge.”
