Yesterday Garrett Hill from Santa Rosa JC made his appearance in the MLB with the Detroit Tigers.

This is the 4th SRJC pitcher to play this year in the ML. Currently there are four former players who are MLB Coaches, GM and Manager.

Academically SRJC is rated 13th in the USA.

  Excellent post, Bob. A great example that debunks two myths about good Juco programs.
  Good JuCo programs do not hinder a players academic progress!  And… a good JuCo program can advance a player as far as any other level of baseball.
  JuCo programs are not for players that don’t have the grades for D1. And JuCo programs are not for players that can’t play D1 baseball. They are for players that aren’t ready for D1 baseball yet. In today’s D1 recruiting landscape the HS players (that are advancing to college) that aren’t yet ready for D1 baseball is over 95%. In my opinion.

Adbono;

Michigan State when I attended had over 16,000 students, two visits to the Rose Bowl, one visit to the College World Series.

As one of the 5,000 freshman I listened to the Dean speak.

'look to your right, look to your left, they will NOT be here in 4 years".

Division 1 has not changed. It is a challenge on the field and in the classroom. Every JC Coach, who I have met is a teacher of the game and life and they are "developers" of your tools.

I grew up near SRJC. My HS classmates went there as a stepping stone to UC Berkeley (and they offer cross-enrollment to take Cal coursework as an undergrad). Great academics, lovely campus, good town+climate. Throw in high-level JuCo baseball and a widely available merit/Doyle scholarship program... seems pretty great for anyone with the talent and grit to succeed in JuCo ball.
