I wish I put thoughts to paper as eloquently as many that post on here, but realizing that is not my forte I will just explain it the best I can. I just finished our regular season this week, and we will be heading into the play-offs for the second year in a row. I have taken this team from being a door mat program that did not have a district win in the 6 previous years before my arrival to one that competes for a play-off spot every year. We now have arguably the best facilities in the region and for sure the best of any small school. Job security is high (or at least as high as it can be in our profession). The pay is not bad for coaches in our area. I say all of that to say...I have little to complain about, and I am proud of the program I have help to build here.

Now, the rest of the story.....Recently I moved to a small neighboring community (with a short commute to my current school), and the locals there have been trying to convince me to start a baseball program at their school. It is an extremely small school (less than 170 in hs) that is made up of a high minority population and most are economically disadvantaged. The school has no field, no equipment, no anything related to baseball. More than likely we will not win a game the first year, but I am going to accept the challenge. These kids need positive people and activities in their lives, and I feel like I can offer that to them through this great game of baseball. Hopefully through baseball I can give these young men another avenue to travel down that will lead to great opportunities and realization that life can be what they make of it. So, if you are the praying kind, offer up a little prayer that we can this thing up and going and maybe continue to change lives along the way.

Coach congratulations on doing what most people probably thought was impossible in turning around one program. I have no doubt there were all kinds of naysayers telling you that there wasn't a chance in the world that you could develop a winner but you proved them wrong.

Now that you have moved on I wish you the best of luck in building another program. Those same naysayers will be there at the new place but you can prove them wrong as well.

Thank you for being in the game for the right reasons.

Who are you kidding d8? Your post was excellent...a very fine bit of writing. You do it well!

Any ballplayer who is fortunate enough to have you as a coach should be exceptionally grateful. You will be successful wherever you choose to coach. Your attitude assures it. Keep us posted...eloquence is expected!

It takes a trusty D8® to build a good program!

Well...I told my players yesterday that I would not be coming back and what I would be doing next year. Most of the responses were typical and what you think they would be, but someone sent me this quote from a player's facebook page....."Well found out today that my favorite coach ever is leaving next year and going to Teneha! Its been great these past 2 years and IV learned a lot from him and I love him like I love my own dad! I'm going to miss you these next 2 years, coach thanks for everything you've done for me and I wouldn't be the player I am now if it wasn't for you!”.....this is from a player who never said much one way or the other about much of anything. So, coaches, know that you are making a difference in these kids lives even if they do not tell you. You may or may not see it, but you are making an impact. Ya'll keep up the good work!!!

Speaking of dozers and earth-moving equipment. I am amazed at the community's willingness to help get this program started. I have found someone that is willing to donate the equipment and labor to start building a new field if I/school supply the fuel. We have gotten together a summer team for the 1st time in ages, and most all of the equipment was donated. I went by the summer team's practice last week and the kids were excited about getting to play next year.....There were some phenomenal athletes (this school routinely competes for a state title in football and basketball), but not many that have played much baseball. There are prob. 3-4 that I can make into players, there are a couple that are playing select ball....now, if I can find a couple more, maybe will not get run-ruled every game.
