My son started mentioning that he liked Slipknot about six months ago. I never said anything, but had no appreciation for Slipknot whatsoever....losers, people who put sick thoughts into the minds of the kids, etc etc.......you know, all the same stuff my parents probably thought when I brought home AC/DC, Sabbath, Mott the Hoople, Ozzy, Ramones, *** Pistols......

So it was with some surprise that I caught myself being close-minded. I'd never taken the time to learn anything about Slipknot... I took it upon myself to open up and not be such an old 47-year old fogie. I've watched the unmasked interviews on YouTube and have been surprised at how eloquent, intelligent, and - yes - even sensitive these guys are behind those hideous masks.....just regular people.

That all said, for those of you who REALLY like great, heavy, pounding guitar, take a listen to "Gematria" from the new All Hope Is Lost album......

And so here's Slipknot, grinding it out for 10 years....now #1 on the US Pop Album charts. My guess is you'll be hearing some of these song intros as player walk-on music next spring.

Another closed mind re-opened.......

I feel ya. Smile
I've had to stray from my blues/Southern rock heritage to listen to Pastor Troy and Chamellionaire (however you spell it Big Grin) Overall, I detest rap and hip-hop because the lyrics are almost always misogynistic. But these lyrics were intelligent, and minimal on the foul language. At least the songs that 2B asked me to listen to.

He went to see Buddy Guy with us and "got it." The least I can do is give his music a chance.

I'll have to listen to Gematria and see if it'll work for my iPod. Smile
Note I did not mention to listen because of the vocals! I just like that kind of guitar work. There are a lot of 'black metal' bands in Europe that have great, even orchestral' music.......but then that growly voice comes in and ruins it.

Anyway, 'Snuff' is a ballad - kind of sad, but....if you gave 'Snuff' to Carrie Underwood, she'd have it on the Billboard Country charts in no time. The guy CAN sing....but the growl better suits the overall enterprise.

Also, if you like metal and twisted humor, check out the Metalocalypse 'cartoon' series......not quite my cup of tea, but the characters are somehow engaging anyway.

Check out 'Snuff'.....normal singing and a heart-wrought lyric. I suppose I gained more understanding of Corey Taylor when I watched an interview and he talked about how bad it messed him up, growing up, having his dad abandon the family when he was four.

THREE continents!! Yes!! Do we have a fourth?! Djibouti, are you there? Canberra? Caracas?! Anyone?
I normally wouldn't admit things like this but since we're all friends here....

I'm 40 and turning into my parents, God help me.

When I was a kid, of course, the music I liked was off limits. I remember showing my mom the cover for The Scorpions "Blackout" album with the forks digging into Rudolph Schenker's eyes. I thought it was the coolest thing and my mom was disgusted.

I remember the day Ozzy Osbourne was coming to town with Metallica. I couldn't wait to see Metallica. Well, mom remembered the stories about Ozzy biting heads off bats and she announced at dinner one night, "don't even think about asking to go to that concert."

Now, it's been a long time since I've been to a metal concert but I have been listening to XM Channel 51, Mandatory Metallica exclusively for a few weeks now and can't wait for the new album to come out Friday.

HOWEVER, the new music today stinks, they're all dopers and s e x fiends and I can't stand anything my kids listen to. It's all trash and they are ruining their lives by listening to it.

Hmmm, that kind of sounds familiar, doesn't it?

I went to my very first concert with an older brother of my best friend. It was Alice Cooper.
My mom thought I was going to see a woman, you know, sitting on a stool, playing a guitar.
No clue.

You are not alone! crazy

Its bad when your kids fingers can text faster than you can think.
What is up with that????
Before I can get the question out " Who are you ----------texting? ", my HS freshman daughter already sent off a three page novel describing her outfit, requested shoe back up, exchanged history notes, and forwarded her revised volleyball practice schedule to 20 of her closest friends. Roll Eyes

Okay, I AM my mother these days but I will confess to attending one Led Zeppein concert at the Los Angeles Forum (where the Lakers and Kings used to play). I don't think I got my hearing back for at least a month as we were seated in the first balcony about 25 feet from one of the 3 story high speakers (well, at least it looked and sounded like it was 3 stories high) ...

The group I was with were, shall we say, not the kind I would have wanted my son to hang with but I was in my mid-20's so I think it was a bit different than when he was in his teens. Those were the days when people could smoke cigarettes at theatrical venues and there was a lot of smoking going on that night ... tho I can assure you that I never smoked more than tobacco ... hmmmm errr ... don't know what my date was smokin' ...

Now I am an 'oldies but goodies' and country (classic more than the newer version) kind of gal and it would take a snowball in you know where to get me to another Zeppelin concert (wonder whatever happened to my date ... )
