Re: Stolen Base or Wild Pitch?

Runner on first. Pitcher throws a ball in the dirt, catcher blocks it cleanly, recovers as the runner heads towards second base. Catcher makes a strong throw and the runner barely beats the throw. Is the runner awarded a stolen base or is this considered a wild pitch?

If the baserunner was going on the pitch, I score stolen base, even if the ball is 20' high and went to the backstop. Its a SB/WP if he makes it to 3rd.

If the baserunner went because the ball was in the dirt and got away, I score wild pitch / passed ball (whichever applies).

In the case you've described, its wild pitch.
