So here is the situation, Batter comes to the plate, my scorekeeper advised this is not the correct batter. I asked it they may an substitutions "No" the Batter has taken several pitches fouled of some etc. I called time and told the umpire that we did not have that player listed, he simply said un-reported sub let play ball.

According to the NFHS Rules "Should there be no announcement of substitutions, a substitute has entered the game when the ball is live and: d. a batter takes his place in the batters box

Goes on to explain "For discovery of an illegal player on offense by an umpire or either team, that player shall be called out and restricted to the bench/dougout for the duration of the game. also goes on to say if any runs or advancement are made they will be returned etc.

What am I missing here or is the Umpire Just an idiot that does not know the rules

I think what you are missing here is that there is a difference between an "unannounced legal substitute" and an "illegal substitute"...

From your OP, it seems as if the substitiute was unannounced but was a legal substitute...(roster player eligible to enter- NFHS 2-36-1)..no penalty, play on.....sub is now in the game per rule....

The penalty you show is for the use of an illegal substitute.....Did you confirm if the substitute was illegal by being a:

  • Withdrawn sub?
  • Twice withdrawn starter?
  • An ejected or restricted player?
  • a player re-entering into an improper batting slot?

I think you are correct now that I understand it better, as far as I know he was a legal substitute, I guess it is just more of a courtesy to announce the Subs to the umpire and opposing team.

noumpere,

In order to get the questions answered and as a moderator, I have at times taken the liberty of removing insults or name calling from posts.  Mainly I have done this for 2 reasons..

  • To keep the post from spinning off topic into personal comments.
  • To keep from insulting the many umpires who come here for free and answer questions year round.

I didnt however alter this one........I felt the irony of the comment in the OP speaks for itself...
