Does anyone have any contact information for any summer internships?  Son is majoring in sports analytics/actuarial science and is searching for something this summer while he is home.  He would love to get in with a sports franchise, as I am sure millions of others would.  HaHa  He's a number cruncher and works hard.   His hip flexor is still causing some discomfort so he is taking the conservative approach and resting it to allow it time to heal and recoop.  This being said he won't be playing any summer ball this year.  YES I'm sad, but happy.  We live in the DFW area, but if the internship was good enough he'd be willing to relocate if need be.  Any information to help point us in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

What University does he go to? Most internships are organized in the fall through Universities, so while he is way behind the curve there should be plenty of them in the Dallas Area. Also based on my son's experience (he is graduating with his masters from UT Austin and will start work in the Dallas area in June) he should focus on "Data Science" or "Machine Learning". This field is exploding and there are tons of jobs and internships in this field and with a little bit of work on his end he should be able to land a local internship.

PM me if you need more information.

Good luck!

You may desire to contact the local pro baseball teams, the Rangers and minor league teams.

Talk with the Assistant GM and discuss your goals and objectives. Create a project which you can use for your term paper and benefit the team.

When I created the Area Code games, I interviewed pro scouts and Scouting Directors and evaluated the Nike Basketball camps.

Very good point.  I have sent him a screen shot of this comment.  I think because we come from a small town and he's going to a small private college the thought intimidates him a little.  Hoping he works his way out of that shell and exposes himself to some possibilities.  He did complete his resume so that's a step in the right direction.  He has lots of motivation and work ethic just doesn't really know how to start.  He's the strong silent type that is the workhorse of the group so his interpersonal skills are in need of being polished you could say.  He's always lived by the token actions speak louder then words.

My son's former college teammate did a lot of analytical and statistical work on the side and submitted papers related to Sabermetrics to MLB and MiLB management.   He attended Sabermetrics conferences on his own dime.   He also did a lot of networking that led to introductions to these decision makers.  My point is this young man worked really hard at finding an internship and "played the numbers" to all 30 MLB organizations to eventually get one summer internship with the Mets.    That led to further opportunities at college graduation and he took at job with the Cubs in 2015.   My son isn't one to exaggerate when he said this kid worked his tail off, even to the point where it became a part time job looking for these opportunities.  These jobs are in demand, so I think it takes an extraordinary effort to get noticed and secure that internship.  Hopefully this gives you a blueprint to pursue some of these internships.  Good luck.

Internships are very hard to come by these days. My son was given permission to skip summer ball to do an internship. He has sent many many cover letters and resumes. Had a few interviews, but still has not landed on something. Most slots get filled by friends, family & favors. Use your connections. Have your son reach out to alumni and faculty from his school. Look to his current teammates families and see what Dad or Mom works for a company that has spots. Warm prospects should be his first line of offense. It's just like getting recruited, but now he has to use his baseball background as his experience. It's not easy for most players to step outside their comfort zone.

The good news is that some companies like having athletes as interns knowing their work ethic & commitment to teamwork. Good luck!

Great point Fenway!

My son will be starting a job in data science and AI starting in July and he said that most of the kids going into this field have their own blog sites with sample work they have done on their own. He said it makes it really easy to see "who knows their stuff and who doesn't".  While the demand is narrow in baseball it is wide open elsewhere, so don't just look in the baseball world.

After watching my son play a season of summer ball full time, part time, and no time, I am convinced that summer internships are more important, even for baseball players, than playing three years of summer baseball unless they are a draft prospect. Very often jobs after graduating are a result of the internship experience/contacts and baseball players to do not get them are at a huge disadvantage. I have also thought that working out is more important than playing for many players, and experts like Kyle Boddy are now pointing this out.

My son was able to do both one season where he worked a summer internship and found a local college league that had mostly JC kids, plus a few like himself who were working and he got his baseball work in as well as an important internship experience.

Just my 2 cents.

Well my son is just finishing his sophomore year so he hasn't been able to get into the meat of the degree so a lot of this stuff he's just now learning.  Thank you all for the information and I value all the suggestions.  I have forwarded these to my son.  I feel we are at a disadvantage being at a small private college and him being our oldest.  We know he will be finishing up at a larger university as they don't have his exact courses, but getting all the classes he's able to now.  I would love for any of those who's sons sought this degree to maybe be able to give him some pointers as to what universities are the best.  We did find out that Syracuse University offers Sports Analytics via online courses however they have to have a certain amount of hours acquired there at that university to get into that program.  Definitely a learning curve.....  We are saying that if he has to have surgery this will be his job to search research and fully examine what his next step is in his education path.

Your son should not feel like he is at a disadvantage.  Both of my older son's found summer internships on their own (parents had no involvement whatsoever), and my oldest did not play summer college baseball because he arranged his own engineering internships over two summers with a major Corporation.   His college baseball program was very understanding about it.

It is very much like the college baseball recruiting process.   They networked, and shook a few trees to see what fell out.   Both would eventually be hired (as engineers) by the company they interned with.   At this time, I'm working with son #3 to direct him toward an internship with experience in his major.  I know it is not easy, but it is worthwhile for him in the internship/job search experience.   If they learn now, they will know how to do it when they graduate.

Best of luck with the surgery and the internship search.

I guess I should clarify...I feel he's at a disadvantage because I can offer NO help in this field or steer him in the right direction.  I know nothing...and neither does his dad about statistics or anything in that wheelhouse.  We have no contacts really as hubbs is a police officer and I work for our local school district so lets just say our contacts are rather limited at best.  He knows he has to do it all himself as I am not able to offer him any other suggestions other than insurance companies and hospitals are a great place to start son....Goood Luck!  Right now he's taking statistics and more accounting classes based on the minimal classes offered at this university.

He should really check out the State Farm Insurance Campus.  I believe it is in Richardson, TX, and it cost over 500 million to build.  Currently, they have over 8,000 employees there, so I am sure there are internship opportunities.  I would check their website, or even call their HR Dept.
