Summer Leagues

I hope this goes here...
What exactly are the summer leagues for college age boys? We went on a recruiting visit and the coach mentioned three he had contacts with three different leagues for son to play on in the future, if he plays for him. The coach said you go live with a family and play baseball. I have heard of the Cape Cod League, but don't know anything beyond the name. The second had Ohio in the name and the third I can't remember, but I think it was out west. Do most college players do this in the summer? How many weeks? TIA
