MESA, Ariz. - Junior Greg Van Sickler has been tabbed as the pre-season Division III Player of the Year in selections announced Tuesday by Baseball America.

Van Sickler, who earned NABC All-America status last season after leading Shenandoah to a 38-10 record and a South Region championship, was selected as a "Player to Watch", the pre-season Player of the Year and as the top NCAA Division III draftable prospect by Baseball America.

Van Sickler hit .411 with seven home runs, 66 RBI and a school record 20 doubles last spring while also winning nine of 11 decisions on the mound with a 2.69 ERA.

In addition to his NABC honors, Van Sickler was selected All-USA South Conference, to the USA South, Salisbury and NCAA Division III Championships All-Tournament teams and as a Valley League All-Star during the summer.

Shenandoah is scheduled to open its 2010 season on February 13 with a pair of games at the ODAC/USA South Conference Challenge.

I'm curious to know if we can just have a post without it leading to Legion vs. Showcase or another program. This is great news for Greg Van Sickler and his family.

More importantly it has nothing to do with the discussion of how to get to the college level. Everyone has a different opinion and that's all it is opinion. I for one think we should just recognize the accolade that Van Sickler received and be happy him!
I could be wrong but I think Coach was referencing DIII as the different route.
At least that is how I referenced the comment. But, I could be wrong? Eek
Having been the parent of a DIII player who did get drafted, I love to see it publicized, when and if it happens, because it is a very tough road.
I also would not like to see the story of a DIII player as anything more than it is. A real accomplishment that does not happen to very many from the DIII level.

What position will he be drafted as?

Who knows??? Way to early to speculate about the draft but this spring will tell a lot about him. Just depends upon WHO likes him as a pitcher and WHO likes him as a position player?

Great young man who has worked his butt off both in the classroom and on the field to become an all-around player for SU.

IMO D1, D2, D3, JUCO, and NAIA are all the same route, but have different stops.

An example of a different route would be "club baseball"

The more people attempt to isolate, defend, or promote the differences between those designations, the more segregated they become. Bottom line they are all baseball players and if you have the tools, the professionals paid to seek you out will find you. In the mean time enjoy the opportunity to play the game.

No doubt about it, as a former player and coach of American Legion Baseball, I am supportive of their program, just the same as you guys support your respective program.

The Baseball America announcement could not of came at a better time which backed my points.

Respectfully shared,
Coach Milburn

I agree Coach May and unfortunately the people and groups associated with Milburns "personal agendas" topics are starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth also. I'm trying real hard not to make that association.
I think Coach Milburn has gotten the point about American Legion and has been taken to the woodshed imho.

I agree with infielddad that this thread was a nice acknowledgement for young Mr. Van Sickler with no agenda involved imho.

I see two things here:

1) Coach Milburn - I think the board understands your passions for American Legion and perhaps give that topic a rest temporarily for now. That should not preclude from starting American Legion topics in the future imho.

2) For everyone else, your points have been made as well. No more need to pile on imho. Please let it go. Thank you - your friendly, evil-doing, free speech hating, moderator Big Grin

Cleveland - Milburn's immediate follow up post was talking about a different route. How much more agenda can you get. My only response to that was why can't we just celebrate Van Sickler's achievements. Not every success story needs to be twisted into a "****ing contest" IMO.

Mid-Atlantic - please let it go. Yours is but one interpretation. I thought the same as infielddad that he was talking D3 to the pros as being the alternative path. Either way, he did not mention American Legion and I think it is ok to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. Thanks in advance for your understanding. Lets acknowledge the Van Sickler young man and leave it at that.
