I need lots of help in trying to get my team motivated. so far we've started off the season 0-5. we are playing the worst baseball ive ever seen. worse than bad news bears. we even made 8 errors in one game. there are only 3 players on my team including myself that I see taking the season seriously. we are the only ones putting in work before and after team practice. all my other teammates act ****ed when we lose, but on the ride home, their talking about going out to eat and other stupid stuff. we are a relatively young team (3 seniors). I personally am a sophomore, but I really need some ideas on getting my team motivated. we need 8 wins to make the playoffs after a 20 game season. please help.

hornetz3b, here are a couple of suggestions that I hope will help:

1. With the 2 other teammates who seem to care, approach your coach and tell him about your desire for the team to improve and start winning. Perhaps you all can collaborate on a game plan.

2. Invite your teammates to your house and watch a good baseball video about a team that battles through adversity to achieve its goals. The movie, "The Final Season," is coming out on video April 15 and might do the trick in motivating your team. http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809866050/video/4178173/

Best wishes for a successful rest of the season!
I believe that motivation is more of an individual personal thing...some kids just differ in their approach to the game.

One piece of advice I would give you though is make sure that you don't alienate yourself from your team by yelling/being negative to your teamates. Yelling at them to "get up" or "get in the game" won't help...they probably already know what they are supposed to be doing, they just aren't for whatever reason. Being a sophmore I doubt any upperclassmen would even give a thought to what you're saying. Do your job and try to set an example for the others...let the coach deal with the motivation/attitudes.
For me, motivation comes from within the team unit and that includes the coaching staff. It is not an individual thing---it sounds like this team could care less about winning or losing--it could be more of a "social" outing for them--this is a shame because this school has had some fine players and solid teams in recent years

Team motivation starts and ends with the coach.

It is his role to bring the talent of the team into a single unit that will perform to the best of their ability.

It is also the coach's responsibility to the game to remove players who do not or cannot perform well from the field.

There are players on the bench who would jump at the chance to get out there to play.

Most importantly, it is the coach's role to prepare the players for the game.

Nothing will break the spirit of a team player like a coach's indifference to winning and losing.
