How typical is this?

Son's HS team had a preseason weekend practice. There's a gentleman situated in the grandstand. Coach asks the players if that's someone's father since practices are closed to parents. Kids don't know him. Coach approaches the man and he identifies himself as a scout for a D1 program in another state. (He shared the school name but I won't mention it here.)

Our field is in a spot where you would only find it if you knew where it was located. Our HS program is currently not considered one of the best in the state. And, our practice schedules are not publicly shared anywhere.

That said, it seemed odd to hear a school scout would be there.

At a game? Sure...maybe?  But on the morning of a weekend practice?

Or, does this type of stuff happen all the time?

It was probably a Dad not wanting to get busted at a closed practice (half kidding, but with today's generation of parents, you never know)

Scouts will definitely go the extra mile to find players.  Their jobs depend on it.

with your thread title, I was expecting a link to an article about some scout who had covered 20,000 miles in 2 weeks or something...

I used to have an older friend who was a great high school and then college coach.  He loved baseball.  Every night of the week he was at some field watching some kids.  He would send notes to guys he thought could use players like the ones he saw.  He just loved the game, was highly respected, and saw it as his job to help get kids to college.  I used to love to sit and talk to him about baseball.  He kept telling me that my youngest who was 9 at the time was the best of the three.  He would even bring his glove sometimes and play catch with my little one who is a senior this year.  Was sad to hear he passed away a few years ago.

I’ve never heard of a scout for a D1. D1’s have assistant coaches in charge of recruiting. He’s also an assistant who is busy helping coach games on the weekend. If there’s a potential D1 player on the team it is possible the coach asked a friend whose judgement he trusts to go take a look. Then the coaching staff will check the player out later at a showcase.

RJM is on the money.

Thats what I do for a few schools that won’t see players until the Summer

1) Approach at practice

2) Attitude: Teammates and coaches

3) BP and Bull Pens

4) Defense

5) Stature as a BB player

Generally hidden from view. I will be at practice field when classes end and watch player on his way to the field as well.
