This is just for discussion and not personal opinion. My son's high school baseball coach gives the players who work out in the offseason STACK magazine. STACK has a lot of training articles. This month's edition has the top fifty school for academics and sports. Then it breaks down the top fifteen for each sport. The criteria is based on ....

USN&WR on America's best colleges
APR
National rank of sport
won-loss record
STACK factor (1: strength of athletic community through athletic support and 2: prowess/ranking)

Baseball Top 15

1) North Carolina
2) Rice
3) Michigan
4) Stanford
5) FSU
6) Miami
7) Virginia
8) Arizona State
9) Texas
10) Vanderbilt
11) Texas A&M
12) Georgia
13) UC Irvine
14) Clemson
15) Georgia Tech

The Top 15 overall (all sports/men's and women's) is:

1) Stanford
2) Texas
3) North Carolina
4) Michigan
5) Florida
6) UCLA
7) USC
8) Duke
9) Georgia
10) Wisconsin
11) Texas A&M
12) Arizona State
13) Ohio State
14) LSU
15) Notre Dame

Dont know about FSU or AzState, but I know Miami is an excellent academic institution. For what its worth, I have no connection to Miami.
I looked up Miami on Princeton Review, and must admit, according to their stats, they look like a fine academic institution. I guess my perception is skewed from watching and listening to Miami grads in sports. Right here in Chicago, Devin Hester can barely speak and still has to be told what bus to get on.

CPLZ I was drinking a Diet Coke when I read that post and ended up having to clean up my keyboard when I read that! Dude that is absolutely hilarious. The fact is some schools athletics enhance the perception nation wide of the school. And then some schools athletics give you the perception that you posted. But dang that is just too funny to me.

I'm going to steal my own thread for a moment for a couple of stories on the Pride of Providence, Marvin Barnes.

1) Back when buses had money on them Marvin held up a bus driver. If being 6'9" wasn't enough of a lead, he was wearing his high school basketball jacket that said "Marvin Barnes" on it.

2) From Bob Costas back when he announced ABA St. Louis Sprits games: The Sprits were flying from St. Louis to Indianapolis for a game against the Pacers. The flight was less than an hour with a one hour time zone change. Barnes looked at the arrival being ten minutes before the departure and refused to get on the plane. "I ain't getting in no time machine."

OK, maybe Wake baseball isn't where it needs to be to make that list -- YET -- but leaving Wake off the list for all sports is bogus.

The success of the total sports program at Wake is mind-boggling. You have a basketball team in the top 10, a football team that has become a consistent winner, the field hockey team has been to the final 4 for 9 straight years, the men's s****r team fell 1-0 in the national semis after being # 1 all year and the national champion last year ... and don't even start on the golf team!

Within the rankings, there are some head scratchers too. Michigan ahead of Stanford? Vanderbilt behind FSU and UVA?

I feel like they published their first draft.
I have to chime in with a couple of stories of Marvin, "Bad News" Barnes.

BTW, the best part of the bus hold up story is that he wore a ski mask over his face and the jacket with his name on it!

He was a first round draft choice of both the 76ers and the Spirit of St. Louis in the ABA. He signed with the ABA because they agreed to give him his salery up front when he signed. Sure enough the IRS went looking for him three months later and found him in a pool hall, broke. He'd ****ed away over a million $s in three months.

Then there was the time he tried to board a commercial flight with the Pistons with a gun in his coat. When he was on probation....

When last heard from the best college player Bill Walton ever played against was living under a bridge in New Haven, CT..

Since one of the factors is fan support how is Wake's fan support for football? Let me ask again, how is Wake's fan support for football when they're not winning? How big is the stadium?

There are overall rankings and ranking by sport. Midlo referenced WF's overall ranking. Since STACK is weighting support for the program(s) and football is the biggest college sport it has to factor into the process in the overall category.
