Steve Philips commented with about 2 weeks left in the season that the Cardinals wouldn't even make the playoffs. Essentially, he pointed out all of the deficiencies of the Cardinals and then also took a shot stating that they aren't even good enough to win the weakest conference in baseball.

The Cardinals then made it to the playoffs. On Baseball Tonight, the staff lamented that the representative of the National League Central shouldn't even be in the playoffs. They pointed out that the Cardinals have the worst record in baseball for any team making the playoffs and that they would take an early exit. In fact, only one on that panel picked the Cardinals to win any game. Well, they did and advanced.

Next, it was the Mets with the "best record in the National League" and tied with the New York Yankees for the best record in baseball. Again, the Cardinals were picked to lose. In fact, since Carpenter was to be pushed back and although the Mets had lost their two best starters, few gave the Cardinals a chance to win even one. The entire panel of Baseball Tonight again predicted that this one would end in 5! They did think that Carpenter would win his game.

Tony Kornheiser and Mike (You Knucklehead) Wilbon both on PTI have absolutely torn the Cardinals apart. I expect as much from Wilbon who did so all year long and admitted early and often that he is a Cubs fan and roots for all teams non Cardinals.

Fox showed a lot of class last night in the Cardinals victory celebration asking at least three Cardinals players what it was like knowing that they are the underdogs again and everyone is picking the Tigers.

As a life long Cardinals Fan and a proud member of the Redbird Nation, I don't care what other people choose to do or their opinions. Something can be said for the overachiever. The guys that play as a team despite a lack of all of the big money free agents. A team comprised of castoffs for throughout Major League Baseball rising to the ultimate dream of making it to the World Series. This is why I love this game so much. On any given day any team can beat the other. Are the Cardinals better than the Mets? Who knows! Yesterday, that one given day, the Cardinals rose to the occassion and allowed a small market team from the Midwest to enter the classic of all sports for the 17th time.

Go Cardinals!

Granderson is a story, not only because of his abilities but because of his approach, demeanor, and intelligence. Maybe sometime in the future he will be wearing a Cubs or Sox uniform and become a Windy City icon. His significant donation to the UIC baseball program only goes to show that he doesn't forget his roots.

Tigers in 6.
It's a Dam|\| good thing!

The Wild card is especially important to a team like the Tigers. The Al (like the NL in the 60's) has so many good teams that a playoff battle is more than fair.

In the NL it's exactly the oppisite. There was exactly 1 good team and they ran out of pitching!

I believe the 2 teams standing are the teams that deserve the WS.

Tigers in 4...unless they are rusty....then 5!
Tuz,

He's old school and wouldn't change what he's been doing for years. I'm completely without explanation as to LaRussa's behavior about this incident (as well as the umpires). Why wouldn't Larussa ask the home plate ump to inspect Rodgers at the first sign of a foreign substance? This is the WS and I don't care how close he and Leland are. He owed it to his team to at least cause a delay in the game and try and help his team by upsetting Rodgers. That "dirt" was not the color of the dirt on the field, but it is exactly the color of pine tar. I could go on and on but most of us watched the game and have come to our own conclusions. That is just my opinion. LaRussa's comments today are just as lame as his lack of aggressiveness last night. It makes me question the umps, also. It was like they just wanted this thing to go away without any escalation. I don't get it.

Guy's....

According to what I hear, there are 2-3 (or more) pitcher's on the Card's and Tiger's staff that mess around with the rules...this according to some inside info from the Dan Patrick show yesterday.

Tincture of "Benzine" is what the "experts" are saying was on his hand. It is used for grip and to a lesser degree, movement. This is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak, sharp finger nails that can tear a stitch easily, various substances etc.

It's my humble opinion after listening to LaRussa and watching the umpire's and MLB in general....that they ABSOLUTELY want this to go away.

The un-written rule is ALWAYS...."DO NOT GET CAUGHT". At this juncture you can be sure that additional exposure to these method's is what MLB fears most.

If Kenny Rodgers is brought to task, you could have a war that would expose at least 1 reason why these 2 teams are in the WS. Don't think for a minute that these 2 men don't know every trick in the pitcher's hand book!

Btw, we need deuce doc to chime in here!
AGree with you, Rosy.

Most lame excuse was Steve Palermo's (umpiring supervisor for MLB)...talking about umpires having "experience" about these things and saying it was likely "dirt".

Definitely pine tar from my point of view.

I would like to see someone get some dirt from the field in Detroit and try to re-create the spot. Bet they couldn't do it.
Is there a Cards in 5 thread yet? 6? hmm, Im not surprised, even in the loss the pitching was ok, Weaver fought his way through a couple of big time jams to get out of innings in that game. Nice to see some execution in key moments tonight, big hits and, of course, another error on Detroit's pitching staff, daamn. Ecky is fun to watch. He got his hands in on that inside heat and did the job, beautiful. I love a guy who runs full speed to first when he gets walked. You've got to love the little shortstop from the Cards, no? After the game he said the magic words on hitting that smoke...didn't try to hit it hard. Brill. The Cards pitching is very strong.

I also love Tony La...the guy is fun to watch in the dugout. I think they should have an isolated cam on him all the time. He is a lesson in focus and quiet intensity. You can just hear his brains whirring away. Something about him standing there, looking out on things gives me a smile. I'd love to know, moment to moment what is going on inside his head, like the tickertape on CNN..interesting series.

Did you see Yadier Molina lazer that ball to second from his knees? One of those angles on the replay made it look like the guy was out. Reminded me of Miguel Olivo, the White sox' old catcher who they got, i believe Freddy Garcia for. That kid has a big time arm.

Next up: Weaver for the Cards and Verlander for Detroit. I've been enjoying this series.

Tuz,

You're running out of games.

Talk about a game of inches. All bad for the Tigers and all good for the .220 hitting Cards. It didn't rain last night but the elements still played a big part in the outcome. However, finally an exciting game for a fan who doesn't care who wins this thing.

Coho, I like your passion but if LaRussa was a college professor of mine, I'd transfer out of that class in a minute. I don't like him, have never liked him but the man is sure due his props right now. It looks like he's really dialed in with all the moves he's making.

First up for the Tigers pitchers next spring; lots of extra PFP.

From what I saw last night, it will mercifully end for the Tigers tonight.

This series so far...What an embarrassment to MLB. Props to the Cards closer and to Eckstein for his "hits" (lololololol). As they say: It's a hit in the scorebook and that is all that matters.

Spiezio will be the star tonight.

-----------

Tigers could be the biggest choke job in MLB WS history. But we should have recognized that when they led the division virtually all season and choked at the end to give the title to the Twins.

The Tigers should spend all of their spring training time working with pitchers fielding the ball...and distinguishing 2nd base from 3rd base.

Millions of dollars are paid to them and one doesn't know the difference between 3rd base and 2nd base. 100+ mph fastball and a pea-sized brain. Another one doesn't know enough to plant his feet.

-----------

I've got egg all over my face. I picked the Tigers in 4.

I think it will end tonight.

.....John and the broken crystal ball.

"I'm melting..I'm melting"

If you didn't know...John is the third one from your left in the crystal ball...you've heard of him surely..."Tin-thereIL".

Seriously...Detroit, given their slide at the end of the season, did not generate too much confidence from all of us out here watching.

I guess the same could be said of the Cards this year too down the stretch.

And the White Sox last year, they almost slid out of the Division lead in the closing days.

The team that is hot at play off time will succeed and this year it appears not to be the Tigers but, rather the Cards.

Unless..........

Momentum shifts back to the overall superior ball club tonight!

Anything is possible. The Tigers had the momentum until they had to wait a week to play. They probably were being worshipped up there in Detroit for the whole week. That is tough to handle for young players and then the pressure starts to build.
Sox, dangitt, the overall superior club won. A good team can be better than a stacked team and it all comes down to who gets to do the pile up.

Whatever you Cards subtractors may say...weak hits, errors, blessings...the bottom line is that the cards came in and pitched fantastic, made the plays they needed to make, scored enough runs to win ugly with some credit due to a very strange series of errors by a lot of pitchers? Strange, but baseball happens and like Yogi says, It's mostly mental and mostly cahoonos and mostly momentum. You have to hand it to the Cards pitching staff and a crew of replacements. The pitching pretty much shut down the big bats from detroit. Slumping? That collective slump was was due to being fuddled at the plate.

This from a person who is a far stretch from being a Cards fan, really far..LaRussa fan? I like his detail oriented approach and I love it when teams like this do what they did. It ain't about St. Louis or Detroit and who you love to hate or love to love. It comes down to the team, and this Cards gaggle is a pretty good study in plain old get in your face and say i cain't.

Maybe I should include a Norman Rockwell painting in this post at this point.

Tigers in 8!!
